View Full Version : Rear end ratio
If I go with a milder 300 - 350 hp setup, what is the ideal rear end ratio for overall drivability?
I suppose another factor is how loud an engine am I willing to put up with at 65 mph?
Or, is the noise all about the wind and the engine roar is left behind me?
Is there a nicer set of side pipes that are quieter than others w/o loosing too much hp?
Good questions. I have 3.55 gears in mine and am very happy with it. Right around 70 mph in 5th gear at 2000 rpm. I have the FFR pipes and I'm fine with the noise level. Others will have different opinions. If you have the opportunity, maybe see a few cars that have different brands of side pipes and see what sounds best?

330-350 (or something close) for daily driver. As far as noise.....use ear plugs. If not for the noise use it for the wind buffeting your left ear...Da Bat

3.55 I believe are the best all around. Exhaust, wind noise and passengers screaming make the ride relatively loud.

No simple answer to most of your questions.
1) Hearing protection is required. OSHA recommends hearing protection for sustained noise above 85 decibels (dBA). My 408W engine and standard FFR side pipes is routinely at or above 87 dBA. Most if not all of these cars get above 85 dBA with any of the standard engine setups.
2) A lot of folks like the Gas-n-Pipe side pipes and I am under the impression they are quieter, but no personal experience.
3) Rear End ratio choice is a complex issue. I am by know means an expert. It depends on your base engine (302, 351W, 427 Big Block), Horse power and Torque, Transmission gearing, and how you want the car to drive. I would recommend talking Gordon of Levy Racing and Mike Forte, both sponsored vendors, to assist you in making your decision. It is important that you get it right for you personally, otherwise you may not enjoy driving the car.
