So, despite hundreds of photos taking the engine apart, bagging and tagging ever bolt and bracket I took off the engine, as I re-assemble it I find myself not having any idea or photo of what goes in the threaded hole in the left cylinder head of my 2004 turbo EJ-205? I posted this in my build forum as well hoping someone can quickly help me!

By looking at the factory manual it should have a oil line to that hole. No sensor, to the best of my knowledge.

On the AVCS engines, that's for the AVCS oil line. I believe it gets plugged on non AVCS engines.

That would make sense as none of my photos show anything (wires / hoses) coming from there, but none show the plug either. It's possible the plug was removed when I sent the heads out. I should check the box of parts that came back with the heads. I thought it was just the old springs and sleeves, but there's a good chance I overlooked a plug. Thanks!

Since that hole is in the cylinder head and the timing pulley covers it when installed, if its threaded I would think a flat plug goes there. Don't think it could be an oil line because of the pulley. I just sent the pic to my Subaru junky friend. He has an engine out right now and will look and get back to me.

I think that is only for AVCS? My engine doesn't have AVCS. Pictures before I disassembled it don't show a hose there, but I honestly don't have a great picture, hence my confusion....

Combing over my pictures, I "believe" this one captures a plug with a crush washer....

Here is a post by Gator the shows the connection for AVCS heads.

Hey all. To close this out, I DID find the plug in the box of my original Valve Springs returned to me by Head Games Motorsports. I must have not removed it myself, hence my lack of memory and a photo before it was bagged and tagged! Thanks for the help as the suggestions got me looking in the right place. I guess since I don't have AVCS, that hole just gets plugged. I would love a new crush washer for it, but find no reference to it on any of the parts sites. Will try and just match at my local Napa.

Ha! YOU definitely pointed me in the right direction.... And you were correct and wouldn't know I don't have AVCS....

It would be an interesting place to put an oil pressure sensor if you can make it fit. One in the rear oil galley plug that most of us use, and one in this one would make for cool data to log and compare.

Iwire has a good write up on AVCS swaps: What is Subaru AVCS? An AVCS equipped JDM engine swap guide for your USDM 2002-2005 WRX:

So, being VERY new to Subaru engines, and the 818, I would be interested in understanding more of what "most of you" use for engine monitoring. I was hoping to be able to monitor at least the basics such as oil pressure, oil temp, water temp, etc with gauges in addition to the ECU "idiot lights"... I'm not sure which factory sensors I can leverage, which / where I would need to add aftermarket ones? I know adding transmission temp to my 5MT would be difficult from other posts, but I would think basic engine monitoring would be something many of you have done many times. Is there a good thread on it somewhere?
