View Full Version : Is a used T5 still a viable money saving option?

The tko is the easy button, but to save some money is the t5 still an option?
One could get a junkyard 98-2004 v6 t5, do a mild rebuild with fresh synchros. Hunt around for an s10 tail housing. Possibly find the shorter input shaft so it can use the bell housing from 93 and prior.....
Assuming a 300 hp 302.
Are parts still available to pull this off at a significant savings to a tko with a fun project in the process?

A V6 T-5 is weak, even behind a very mild V8. Fox body V8 T-5s are plentiful, still relatively inexpensive and already configured correctly (i.e., no need to swap input shafts).

T-5s behind V8s or World Class T5s were rated at 325hp I believe. I would point out that that rating is SAE Net hp, this standard is used in the USA by all automotive manufacturers. This is importaant because 325hp is equivelent to about 375-380 gross hp or what most crate motors are rated by. I have had a T5 behind a 347 stroker that was dynoed at 412hp and have had no issues

If you are having a Tremec T5 rebuilt and your engine HP is more than the stock 302, then you should consider upgrading your T5 build to a T5Z. Once upgraded, suitable up to 450HP. Not that costly, assuming you are getting it overhauled anyways.

This is basically my build. I rebuilt a T5 WC and I stroked a 302 to 306. Gets put on the dino next week. I’m guessing about 360 HP.

Every dollar counts but why bet on a transmission that might not hold up? Anyway, your $, your decision but in for a penny in for a pound as they say.

T5 is pretty reliable. I wouldn't put a Coyote in front of it but depending on setup there is 5k-10k in savings.

There's a $10K dollar savings if you used a T5 over a TKX? Wow I got a deal on mine then.

I'm saying the whole setup. Your obviously toning down the motor as well. Packaged together there is real money that can be diverted to other places. That's what I meant anyway, certainly didn't mean to imply a transmission costs that much

Oddly, my T5 is the ONLY thing I've never had a problem with. It has a Steeda Triax Short-throw shifter and it's just perfect. First engine was mild 306, currently running a 450hp 347.

I heard 3rd gear is what breaks first, if anything.

Do they still make the super alloy T5?
