I am in the process of getting ready to order a gen 4 roadster and have some questions about the configuration of a coyote motor for the build. I have looked at the 3 generations of the coyote motors as well as the 5.2 L aluminator.
Starting to think a generation 2 motor with some upgrades to improve looks and performance might be the right option for me... car will see street, autocross, and track days. I am struggling to find good information on a good combination of mods... intake, cam covers.. etc.
From your experience can you guide me on suggestions, or sources of information in this area?
Thanks
JohnP
The Gen II coyote went out of production in 2018, I believe. If you buy one new from Ford (or another dealer), it will no doubt be a Gen III. In order to find a Gen II, you'll need to find a donor (e.g. wrecked Mustang). I have a Gen II and am happy with it. I know a number of people who have Gen IIIs and they are happy with them. Bottom line: this is your build, you should try to find what works best for you. That said, if you want a "new" crate motor Coyote, it will be a Gen III. Best of luck! You won't be disappointed whatever way you go!

I assume you know both Gen 1 and Gen 2 are no longer in production so not available as crate motors. Only in the used market. Also, I don't think Gen 1 control packs are out there any more. Gen 2's control packs are still available. So personally, I'd cross the Gen 1 off the list. Gen 2 only if you're OK with used. Gen 2 intake cover obviously fits the Gen 2 and some are modifying it to fit the Gen 3. Gen 2 will take coil covers. Lots of options. Gen 3 not possible due to the added direct injection plumbing. The Gen 3 has the best intake, and putting that version on the Gen 2 is a common mod. At the end of the day, if you're looking for new, see no reason to look further than the Gen 3. If you're willing to go used, Gen 2 is certainly an option and some will argue can be made better looking. In the eye of the beholder I guess. I modified the Gen 3 cover for my Gen 3 and am OK with the look.

The Aluminator is another story. Earlier versions were built on the Gen 2. Now I believe they have a Gen 3 version available. Obviously much taller money and cool factor. But personally I've found the stock motors have way more power than I can use, so haven't pursued anything with those.
Lots more information on this forum. And even more on the Mustang forums if you really want to get into it.

The stock Gen II motor is excellent. Smooth, reliable, lots of power for it's size. The heads and cams are very good.
I spent a lot of time researching power mods. For more power, you can do the standard options like high compression pistons, aftermarket cams, P&P heads, etc. But you'll spend a LOT of money for minimal return. A set of cams and springs will cost you around $2,000!
IMO, adding a blower is the best way to add more power. It's not difficult. It's not terribly expensive considering the return. And in general driving it feels like a stock car. It will even get 20+mpg.
But, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. :)
As for cosmetic stuff, cruise through any Mustang parts web site for some good (and bad) ideas.

Thanks all for your responses.... really appreciate all the info and help on the form from all of you .... was looking at gen 2 because it did not look like performance and appearance mods where available for gen 3 engines. I have since found that all the gen 2 intakes fit the gen 3 engines including the cobra jet plus some comparisons and Dyno tests. It also looks like there may be some manufactures starting to make coil covers for gen 3... I was going to try contacting them. If so looks like gen 3 would work out just great.
Thanks

Read those reviews carefully. Unless you're into really high RPM's, the 2018 intake performs as well or better than most others. Including on a Gen 2. Not that I'm selling (really...) but you'll have to go after a Gen 2 pretty hard to bring it up to a bone stock Gen 3. The 460 HP advertised rating is low. Proven by multiple tests. Having had both, I can confirm the Gen 3 is angry.
Interesting that you're seeing possible future options for coil covers on the Gen 3? Good luck. Both sides are really congested. No way anything is going to snap down nearly flush like the Gen 2. Something tall that flies over I think is the only choice. I did find where Ford Performance is selling some covers that fly over the fuel rails. OK I guess. But the heads are still completely exposed. And the regular engine cover (cut down or otherwise) will no longer fit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oS0R8g4TAvo&ab_channel=Allan.

2018 intake was one of the best especially for street use .... if I went with cobra jet it would be foe track use and looks.... I have seen pictures of ones painted silver/aluminum look that I liked ... all try and post if I can figure out how to post a picture.

I did find a company that said they where going to offer a gen 3 coil cover but looks like it never happened. Did you ever get any feedback on Ford offering a gen 3 version in the future?
