I noticed recently that my 2017 Gen2 Coyote is stumbling for a bit on a cold start. I have put nearly 1500 miles on it before it started doing this in the last few weeks. I have been running a Lund tune for the past 1,000 miles. I checked fault codes on the OBD2 and the only one I am getting is the P0116, which apparently was a common "false positive" on early Gen2 Coyote, but not sure if that was still an issue on the 2017. Either way, I don't know if it is related to my issue. What do you think this could be? Fuel related?

Here is warm start video, no issues.

Are you not getting a MIL "on" from this code? Doesn't look like your light is on. Also notice on your second video that your idle is high.. Mine idles warm 800rpm

Check for an air leak on the engine side of the MAF meter and vacuum lines.
If you have a fuel pressure gauge, watch it on the cold start. Gotta start some where.

Hi, getting the same code (P0116) and light (2017 Coyote Gen 2).

Can I get rid of this code when I get the engine tune or do I need to get Ford to reprogram the PCU ?

Thanks,

Mark

P0116 is a known issue on Gen II coyotes. If you call tech support at Ford Performance, they will tell you to send them the PCM and they will re-flash it. End of problem. Of course, this is assuming that you have not applied a tune to your current PCM...

You could continue to clear the code via your OBDII scanner, but in the long run it's easier to just let Ford fix it. At least this was my experience.

My MIL is not lit, which makes me wonder if it is working correctly. I remember testing it before I put the body on though.

Does anyone know if Ford would require me to pull the PCM and send to them? Lund told me they could fix it but would cost me $150 to re-open a six month support window with them. May be worth it if it keeps me from having to pull the PCM.

What does everyone think about that slight hesitation on cold start? I did find a cracked vacuum cap that maybe was allowing an air leak. I swapped that out and a subsequent cold start did not exhibit the same behavior, but I don't think it was 100% cold. I will start it up again soon and see if it's still there.

Do you get a flash on when switching on ignition? My MIL light flashes a split second on ignition and has a continuous glow (using a LED light) that I only see at night.

Good way to know if your light is working... ;)

Thanks all.

So the ONLY way to address is to pull/send my PCM back to Ford ?

If you have a custom tune, your tuner should be able to suppress the code as well.

Thanks Shark.

Not quite there with my build but would you say a custom tune is inevitable therefore just address it then vs the gymnastics of pull/ship/reinstall?

Just curious what’s the typical cost of a custom tune ?

What generation Coyote do you have? You are most likely going to want or need a tune anyway. I did mine with Lund Racing and at the time it was around $700. The price included the nGauge device that is used to upload tunes and performs the datalogging that is required for your remote tuning sessions. There may also be a local tuner near you that could do it, and perform dyno testing, but I went the remote tune route.

2nd rec for Lund tune.

Gen 2 (2017)

Thanks for the info.

So forgive my ignorance but it sounds like I will get something to conned OBD and the connect/tune remotely ?

Yes the initial purchase will include a device and it will download and save your stock tune in case you ever need to restore it. It uses a micro SD card to hold the files. They will ask you about all your equipment and give you a base tune that you will upload through the OBD2 port. You will then go into a data logging mode, rev the car to certain RPM levels for a certain amount of time, then email the datalog file to the tuner. He will read the data, adjust the tune, and send you a new one. You will perform a series of RPM pulls on the road and email the data log back, and get a new tune to upload. Eventually he will have you pull a 7200 RPM, 100% throttle run for a final log. You can do that on the road or at a local tuner. I did it on the road in 2nd gear - hit about 85 mph on mine.

Sounds exciting. Thanks for the detail.
