Hi all, have been debating colors and wanted to bounce this off of the community to see if there are any opinions on this color combo. My paint color is going to be VIKING BLUE. I know I want to move away from the black interior, but I've been trying to figure out if I want to go with a BLUE interior or a brown interior. Any thoughts or feedback would be much appreciated.

Here is the scheme for the color: You'll notice I keep the black in much of the cockpit and the color will be mostly the dash, seats, and doors.

I am debating between a blue like this. Granted it's a pretty nice picture and hard to envision the entire cockpit. But I like the direction:

Or a distressed brown like this:

I personally would go the brown look. I think with the classic Viking blue it would be a nice combo. Not sure about the blue on blue though. Again just my personally thoughts, it is your roadster so do as you want to do.

I searched viking blue and saw everything from light blue to medium dark blue. Can you show us your viking blue?

Since you asked, my opinion on blue interiors is that it will kill the potential resale of your car. You're probably thinking, "I don't ever plan to sell". So, we're back to build it the way you want it. See what I did there? :D

Brown has my vote.

... to see if there are any opinions ...

yes, there are always opinions on this and just about any other topic ... :)

I'm with Papa on this one, on both fronts.

I don't think these cars ever get away from their heritage, rooted in incredible power / weight ratio, harsh ride, and exciting (and unforgiving) handling. To me, the black interior says, "all business", in keeping with the heritage. The brown / blue looks to me like it belongs in more of a touring car.

But I'm just as solidly behind the 'build it the way you want it' statement. And I just bookmarked Fman's gray carpet, man is that stuff handsome ... go figure ...

If you're sold on the basic color scheme, I'm going to sit back and enjoy all the impassioned opinions on various shades of blue and brown.

If the Viking Blue you're thinking of is a very dark blue, then I personally think the light brown/tan displayed in the roadster you picture, would be a very rich and elegant color combination. The added bonus is that the lighter color is a lot easier on passengers in the hot summer sun.

Have you considered a perforated material like this? 141900. This seat is black vinyl. But the center of the seat was replaced with a perforated vinyl with blue holes that match the paint. The headrests, center of the rear wall and tunnel cover are done in the same manner. It's subtle, but ties the colors in nicely. There are different colors. However, I am not sure if it comes in a leather. The marine grade vinyl is chosen over leather for this application because of the exposure to sun/rain/etc..

Edited to add..

The blue in this picture is a darker blue and looks better in person. I like it because it nicely matches the paint I choose. If you want go with blue LED curtesy/floor lights, let me know. I have enough left over to do the floors and trunk/cubby if you want it. This picture is from a while ago. I have the LEDs at full power and brightness in this picture, but they are normally not as "in-your-face" like this. 141904.

I am not one for blue or tan interior, but I like the destressed brown best. I think a Cobra should have a black interior or of that shade no mater what exterior color. I think the farther away you get from looking like the original the more it looks cheesy. Just my personal opinion.

My personal opinion.....

Cobra interiors should be black. Anything else starts looking like a "kit car". I think blue would be screaming "kit car". I have seen a couple that have the tan plush overstuffed look with contrasting piping, etc. and that says Pimp-mobile to me.
The distressed look is very nice. But, out of place on a Cobra. Hot rod stuff on a Cobra is the worst combination to my eye.
"Looks good" doesn't always look right.

As everyone else says, build YOUR dream. My dream might be your nightmare.

Several years ago I remember really liking an Audi with contrasting interior colors (brown/black), but now not so much. Black will always look great. Viking Blue with the blue interior you show may be too blue. You might want to consider a dark charcoal gray, that would compliment the silver in the Viking Blue. My advice would be to get some swatches before committing to something.

IMO, some of those Backdraft sleds with the "optional" interiors look like freakshows.

The basic zen of a Cobra is "all business."

Okay, so I'm going to throw this one out there.....

Shelby America offered the Cobra in a couple (possibly three) shades of blue.... guardsman, viking (originally known as "princess"), and sky (almost a silver). All were really AC colors, as the cars were painted before being shipped from England.

They also offered a few interior colors - black, tan, and red.

I once saw an original 289 car in this color combination and it was striking in person.... but definitely built to a taste.

A Viking/Princess blue 260/289 slabside with red interior is stunning...

Red interiors can be very nice looking with the right color car. I test drove a Lexus RC that was pearl white with red interior that I thought was stunning. Silvers, grays, and black with red are also very classic looking. I also like white interiors with certain exterior colors, but would never own a car with white; too hard to keep up with.

I saw a thread a while back by a member “donkey kong” asking about the effect of light blue on a cobras value. Car was a viking blue slab side with a tan interior that almost looked orange. I never would have believed it but I thought it came out really well. Got me thinking of the old Gulf cars and Steve McQueen I guess. That having been said I would strongly agree with the previous advice to look carefully at color swatches before pulling the trigger on the money cannon.

You guys beat me to it. Red was an original interior color, and I like it!
:)

EDIT: The interior NC Cobra posted is nice too...

EDIT AGAIN: I did a google of "red cobra interior" and amongst the many pics there was a thread on CC about red interiors. Some originals are shown.

Ha! I was cracking up catching up on this thread. Sorry I've been MIA, the notifications aren't working for me for some reason.

I am VERY glad to have gotten the feedback here. I agree that black is timeless and I've seen 20 year old Cobras that still look new. The black has a lot to do with that, I think. So you guys knocked some sense into me and I appreciate it! Also simplifies the build so I also appreciate that.

Cheers guys,
Matt

I agree...

But if I was doing a slab side, i would consider tan as well. Blue might be too much.
