Not real instructions on how it is supposed to work, I assume you pull it out for on, and push it in for off, and twist for interior brightness. However, I think either mine is broke or I am missing the clip or something as mine, the pole just falls out, no resistance at all.
Opinions or options welcomed.

When you push the knob/shaft into the switch as far as it will go, it should lock into place. Check to make sure that little button on the bottom is all the way out. Maybe exercise it a bit. When you pull the knob out, first stop is parking only. All the way out is parking plus headlights. Twist for dimming (depending on your gauge lights) and twist all the way counterclockwise and against the stop (you should feel it clicking) turns on the courtesy light circuit. To remove the knob/shaft, pull all the way out (headlight on position), push the button on the bottom, and it should be released to come the rest of the way out. These can sometimes be a little fiddly. But should work as I just described. If it's defective (and a new kit) Factory Five may replace. Or a new ACDelco D1588 is about $25. Also sold by Painless, Ron Francis, and American Autowire, among perhaps others, under their part numbers.

Thanks for the response, my switch was stuck. I popped the top, which loosened the shaft lock, made sure the shaft locked, then put it back together. Success, now I have headlights. Just need to figure out the brake lights...

I had a faulty headlight switch. My tail lights did not work. I started checking voltages and found that the switch was bad. I had power to the switch and continuity for the wire from the switch to the tail lights.
