Hi all,
Digging around the forum and trying to figure out what oil pans others would recommend or whether to modify the existing pan I have. I am using a 2015 coyote in my type 65.
Looks like most people use the Moroso 20570 . I also found others using a model produced by Canton.
It seems like the price of the moroso pans has gone up by about $100 bucks. I am pondering welding on my own sump modeled after the moroso to the existing pan after removing the deep rear sump. I am not afraid to cut things up and I could spend the money elsewhere. Has anyone taken this route before? If I screw it up I could always go store bought, but I like altering things to make them work and the money could be put toward the bell housing...another costly part that I would have to buy.

Not my thing because I don't even weld. Just one caution. Duplicating the lower profile is one thing. Make sure you know what's happening inside too. There's a series of baffles and trap doors to keep the pickup in oil at all times. That money you save is going to look like not such a good deal if you're sucking air. The Coyote (and most any other engine) will self destruct quickly. Applaud your creativity. Personally, I'd look for money to save elsewhere.

100% agree with Paul. Unless you build oil pans for a living, there are nearly infinite other ways you could save $100+. Parts that don't cause 100x their cost in damage if they fail :D

I hear what your saying. I don’t have any interest in blowing my engine to bits due to oil starvation and would only propose this if I thought it could be accomplished without doing so. The moroso pan has a series of baffles in it to prevent the pump from running dry by carefully routing/ restricting the route of the oil like Edward B stated. I totally agree that it is a great pan and a safest route to go.The thing is , $600 is a good chunk of change for me and if I can be creative and fabricate a cheaper alternative that will work well and not look like a turd then I find a little fabrication to be very appealing option. Making stuff and modifying cars is something I enjoy and is how I learn. ..with some pain and mess ups along the way...It is also one of the things that first drew my interest into cars and hot rodding in general. It is that built not bought mindset that brought me to buy a factory five so I understand there is a risk, but sometimes the journey of creating makes it fun and worthwhile...or maybe I’m just a glutton for punishment.
For those that have taken off their stock pans what does the interior of a 2015 pan look like? This is something I need to consider as I investigate and weigh my options. I appreciate the advice from all. Thanks for any feedback. Adios, T.

Check with Richard at North Race Cars. He advertises a pan for the Coyote for $430. The pan is likely made by Canton as they made the pans for the 4.6L engines. It is worth a shot to see if he can help and save you some money.
I agree with the other comments, making your own pan mods is risky.

Take a look at this one... $100 cheaper?

Thanks. I will definitely check it out. More information never hurts. I also saw that Moroso has a black powder coated version of what appears to be the same pan for less. Odd, but black is ok by me.

Looks like North Racecars has one as others indicated at $440 plus shipping. This includes pickup and is the same design as the Moroso pan. You can use the stock gasket and this pan is made by Champ. Champ is in located in Wisconsin. https://www.champpans.com/products/c/oil-pans/ https://www.champpans.com/products/c/oil-pans/
I like supporting local when I can.
I also found a Moroso 20570 at a place called Tweety’s in Texas for $436 and another in Florida at Iconic Parts for $399. Pickup would still have to be purchased for additional cost. Both work out to be around $460 for the pan delivered.
Either of these options beats spending $570 at Summit.
I also pulled the pan off my coyote to do some investigating. It has an odd plastic gasket/windage tray and large oil level sensor plus baffles around the sump. You are all right that this is a more specialized pan. I thought the stock pan would have no baffles and be more like my old school pontiac 400. Definitely not the case. I think you are all right that it is best to go with an aftermarket pan that has been tested. I can weld, but I am not a welder. Thanks for entertaining my thoughts and offering all your expertise! Which pan did you go with? I’m thinking about getting the champ pan. Does the factory dip stick work with the champ pan or is there modification needed to make it work? Seems like the Moroso says that the factory dipstick works and the canton says that you have to buy their dipstick. Do y’all know if the canton can use the factory dipstick?

Here is the link to the champ pan. This is the one I went with. https://www.champpans.com/products/p/cp4700/
I am inquiring about the dipstick. I thought that I was told originally that it would work. I am putting my pan on in about a week when I have some time off and weather warms up. The desired oil level should not change with the lower pan...if I am thinking of things correctly. The only modification I can foresee is having to trim the stock dipstick if it bottoms out in the new lower pan. Richard from North Racecar says it should work.

Thanks for the reply. Let me know how it goes. I may order a champ pan next week.

Got the champ pan..just in time for the warm weather. Very nice piece. Lots of baffles and trap doors. I can tell it should work with the stock dipstick as advised. Putting it on soon. The only problem I can see that might need a little trimming is by where the dipstick enters the lower sump. I have included a pic. I plan to clearance that before trying it on. Otherwise a very nice piece with pickup from North Racecar.143987

It looks good. Are you installing your pan with the engine in the car or on a stand? I’m waiting on my type 65 kit to come in which should be in the middle of June. I’m gathering parts and wondering how bad it would be to install it with the engine in the car. I thought about going ahead and ordering and install it with the engine on the stand but I’ve got to bolt tranny to the engine and don’t want to risk hurting/scratching the pan.

I used a Champ pan for my 4.6L DOHC engine back in 2013. Check the drain plug to make sure it threads in and out cleanly. On my pan, they failed to run a tap through the drain plug bung after welding. I had to buy a tap and remove the pan to clean up the threads. The threads can suffer distortion when the bung is welded to the pan. This was a QC issue due to people cutting corners, the repair feel on me. The pan is easy to install on the engine stand, no so much fun once in the car.

The drain plug is a nice magnetic one with a copper washer. It is clean on the one I have. For install I was thinking of just lifting it on the hoist and pulling off the old one and putting the new one in place and then lowering it back on to my wooden cradle I made. I just need to see what size the 2 holes are on the side so I can plug them. It is my understanding that I don’t need the oil level sensor for operation of the gen 2 coyote. Thanks all.

Put the champ pan on today with the unusually warm WI weather. Looks good now that it is on. I had some issues with the pickup tube contacting the well around the pickup tube. On the opposite side that does not need clearance for the tube there was a nice recess. On the side that needed the clearance there was not. I am thinking someone flipped the two parts around when welding them..or else it is a poor design. I guess I should have went with the Moroso. It took lots of looking and some careful applications of modeling clay to see where cutting was needed.
Here are some shots showing how it came.

It works now, but it was irritating to say the least. I am contacting champ and North Racecar to let them know what happened and to hopefully prevent it from happening in the future. I will see what kind of response I get, but it was not right.
After cutting away the obstruction.

Very cool. I already got a reply from Champ and it is like I thought ...it was an error. Two pieces got flipped causing the issue I had. They apologized and are sending out some floor mats my way. Mostly I am happy that this was just an oops and not something people should normally have to deal with. Good luck with the modifying. I almost went that way at first with the stock pan. In the end it is all good. Nothing that can’t be fixed with a cutoff wheel and a Dremel.
