Today I picked up a 818C unfinished kit from David. He lives about 2 hours to the NE of me and I was able to come up with a price we both could live with to buy. It comes with a 2006 WRX Co Part donor parts. After loading everything in my FFR trailer we parted ways as new friend's. Funny we both originally came from PA. and lived about 30 miles from where each other grew up. He is heading back to PA. Here is a photo of me and David as well as the stuff. I will post soon on what I plan to do with it. I am still waiting on my new shop to be finished as well as finish my wife's 33.

Sweet! Another Wallace build!!

Thanks! Yep this is the forth 818 for me. Marsha my wife really likes the look of the 818C. May have to keep this one a while once done. I think she misses her BRZ.

Covid has slowed that way down. Color should be painted on body in the next 2 weeks or so. I'll post when that happens.

What color is the 818 in your avatar picture? I'm thinking of getting something close for my 818C ... I like Nissan Monarch Orange Metallic, Sunset Drift Chromaflair, Sherwin Williams "Big Bad Orange" PCRS3, and and Sherwin Williams "Orange Crush" PCRC46.

It was a custom PPG color that my painter made up. It was one of a kind. Not sure we could even reproduce it. Here is build thread it has some paint info in it.

Finished up the inventory. A few things missing. Hopefully FFR will help me out. I removed engine and trans. Car must have been hit in front. Cam covers shot. Pulleys and belts turn true though. Not sure why someone would cut the engine harness 2" from the connectors instead of just unplugging the connectors. Just some wire fixing to do. I removed seats and stock seat belts. I will use other stuff. I put most of the body back on the chassis for storage till my new shop is done. I will start on engine and transmission tear down. I like to have the drive train already to go when I reinstall it.

I have about a week before my 33 body is all done, so I am doing a little work on the 818C. The car did not roll well at all, so I am replacing all the wheel bearings and hubs. The chassis does have nice new rotors, pads, tie-rod ends and all new poly bushings on all the suspension parts. Got the stuff from Rock Auto , but I need to get front inner and outer bearing seals. The rear kits came with seals but not the front. Back to Rock Auto, LOL. :p

Front wheel seals came in. Replaced front wheel bearings, seals and hubs. Car rolls easy now. I will still replace rears as well at a later date. I removed steering rack and plugged off some holes and started on hose from one side to other. Trying to do a little while waiting on Marsha's 33 paint.

Cleaned/painted and did all the necessary work to the steering rack and coupler. My wheels and tires came in, as well as my steering wheel. Wheels are basically same dimensions as the FFR wheels and suggested tires. The steering wheel is 320MM like the FFR unit. I did buy the FFR adapter. I did not want to use the factory airbag steering wheel.

My Kirkey seats from Summit came in today. They are the 20" Pro Street drag seats not the road race/circle track seats. Sides are not as big to aid getting in and out better for us old guys. LOL. Plenty of head room and leg room with these in the 818C. I am 6'3" tall with a 32"inseam.

Finally had some time for the 818C. I stripped down the engine and came up with a parts list. Also did the transmission conversion. I will most likely do a long block. Too much stuff is bad.

octobersknight,
I did development for Harley Davidson in seventies/eighties, and worked with the styling guys. They specified Big Bad Orange for the race team, flat track by then. The color originated at AMC for their pony cars in the sixties.
They also told me orangie reds are favored by men, purply reds are favored by women. They also recognized that trendy colors move through various industry/markets, but originate in women's lingerie.

Got to work on the 818C some today. I had to replace the RF steering knuckle and wheel bearing. The ones that came with the car were bent, most likely from the Co-Part accident donor. I also replace the rear wheel bearings and rear most control arms with adjustable units I had laying around. I will next replace all the brake calipers as they are all rusted solid. This Co-Part buy was not a good one IMO. I prefer a donor I can drive before buying. At least now the 818 will have all new wheel bearings as well as hubs and brakes.:p

I installed rack stops so the front tires do not hit the frame at full lock. I use 1" collars from Tractor Supply and just increase the ID slightly with a die grinder. Works great IMO. Now I have room at full lock L&R. I am now working on dieting the engine harness to delete all smog equipment. as well as fix the 2 engine connectors Co-Part cut off.

Today I was able to repair the 2 engine wire harness connectors that were cut off of the donor car. I also removed the wiring to the tumbler units as well as the air injection system. I am using TGV deletes. After a lot of soldering, heat shrink and tape all is well now. Just to be sure I verified connectivity to all wires and connectors. All is left is to install some heat protection on the harness in key areas.

All my rebuilt brake calipers came in. I painted them with black caliper paint and installed them with the new pads that came with the donor parts. I also installed the new brake hoses to the calipers. I am going to take a few weeks off for a camping trip. Hopefully get really going on the 818C then.

I have been on vacation camping for the last month. When I got home the long-block showed up. I am swapping stuff over. Cylinder heads are different. IAG has hose kit to fix this issue. I mounted my old winch from my previous shop. Now the roof is out of my way. Hope to get back to some real work on the kit now.

I have worked on the engine the last few days. Still waiting on some parts to come in. I forgot how dirty it is working on a donor build. Lots of cleaning, wire brushing and painting. I have a fair amount done. I had to install an IAG hose kit for the RS. I also installed a new cartridge for the turbo. Lots cheaper than a new turbo for sure. Hope to install drive train in a week or 2.

Installed new motor mounts, alt, A/C compressor and turbo. Still waiting on a bunch of stuff. If I had to do this deal again I would have passed on this kit. The previous owner's Co-Part donor is a POS. I should have looked over stuff better. Oh well I did help out a guy who is having a real tough time health wise. If you are thinking of doing a 818 in the future. Spend the money to get a quality donor. You will save money in the long run. Trust me , I know. LOL. :p

A part of the intake runs right over the aluminum piece with the VCP fitting. Might want to check that you have clearance for the hose that connects to the VCP fitting with the intake. I just added that fitting to mine and it is pretty tight in there. Most people, including myself, angle the fitting toward the drivers side a bit for that reason.

Thanks for the concern. It is not going to interfere with the intake. This is my 4th 818. Not my first rodeo. You did make me recheck it though, LOL.

I'm in the middle of modifying my headers for more ground clearance. Yours look like they will hang awful low...I know this is definitely not your first rodeo [I think I have a file of "wallace18" photos on my computer that I've collected over the years] =), so I'm wondering what your fitment has been like (specifically with keeping the headers above the frame rail)? Just curious.

Best,

Most likely will be below the frame. They were on my first 818 also. I did not have any issues with that one. As with any Factory Five you must be aware of your surroundings. These cars are much lower to the ground than most OEM's. See post #296 picture #3 of my first 818 build.

Due to parts problems I am going to put the 818C to the side for awhile. I never thought I would see so many items backordered from company's I have dealt with for years. I finally got my wire harness/ecu and shifter today. I am still waiting on my Perrin up pipe as well as a few other key items. My wife really needs me to address a few issues on her 33. I need a quieter exhaust, raise the gas pedal, fix the transmission cooler issue as well as the 4R70W oil pan leak. Hopefully be back on the 818C by late August.

Still waiting on Perrin up-pipe to turbo. I did get some stuff done in August. Most of engine plumbing, wiring done. Some A/C stuff installed. Installed shifter and cables. Could not use the VCP Shifter and cables due to they won't work with my A/C setup. Here is some pics.

Some may be wondering what I have been up to. Well, I am still waiting on up-pipe. This parts issue Covid has caused is very trying indeed. I decided to try to start the 818 without the up-pipe just to hear it run for a minute or 2. Unfortunately it seems to only try to start on 1 or maybe 2 cylinders then just crank away. I had to repair 2 of the main engine connectors as they were cut off the engine harness about 4 inches from the end for some strange reason. (See post # 20. ) I will be ohming out each wire this week. Also I have found some errors on the VCP harness concerning some circuits wired incorrectly as well as poorly crimped connections. So I will also be checking every wire from the Haltech unit to where it lands on the engine harness as well. This first involved me getting all the correct factory wiring diagrams as well as Haltech ones. Wish me luck on this endeavor. LOL.

After some extensive searching in wiring diagrams I was able to fix the wiring on the brown plug from the ECU to the drivers side engine plug. The injectors and coils were not wired properly and the ECU signal ground wire was open circuit to the Haltech ECU.
I will be going over the black plug next, then the passenger side plug as well as all other circuits.
Time consuming for sure, but much needed unfortunately.
Once I get everything running properly I am going to replace all the crimp connectors and solder/heat shrink the connection.

After fixing some fuel sender wiring issues as well as temp gauge issues and some coil wiring issues, I decided to get Wayne at VCP involved and sent him some wiring data from my 818 and waiting on hearing back from him before going any farther with that stuff. I did however insulate the rear area and the seat area. I used 1" of silver backed foam board and Eastwood X-Mat. I also installed the passenger side firewall. I am going to try to keep busy as much as I can while waiting on parts and info.

After some email back and forth with Wayne, I decided to wait till I get my up pipe and take the go-cart 818 to him to see if we can get to the bottom of why it will not start or run for more than 2 sec. I did learn how to calibrate the gas pedal and ECT with my laptop thru the Haltech ECU. Unfortunately that did not fix the problem. I have moved on to other stuff to stay busy and not be so irritated with the lack of engine success.
I made up the center console and mounted my Speed Hut. Oil Pressure, volt meter, Boost/vacuum, and Wide band A/F ratio gauge. Also did mock up work on rear bumper, sides of 818C.

Well my up-pipe finally came in. After spending several days on the phone with Haltech and Wayne, I finally have given up on me getting it to run properly. At least now it starts but won't stay running. On the 17th I am taking it in my FFR trailer to VCP in Enterpise, AL. Hopefully Wayne will get it sorted out on his chassis dyno. I did make an exhaust setup, installed e-brake, mounted Haltech ECU and fuse panel, vise-grip install the dash, LOL. Installed driver's seat minus rear brace for set-up purposes. I also did front and rear alignments. Hope to report much needed progress in the next couple weeks.

Went to VCP in Enterpise, AL yesterday. Wayne spent lots of time with Haltech and finally got the 818C go-cart running properly. Turns out Haltech uses the opposite bank that MegaSquirt uses for their ECU for proper syncing. Once we swapped B9 with B2 it ran fine. Then Wayne did his magic on the chassis dyno. I was not after big numbers just a really good driver. Wayne got a super flat torque curve and decent HP #'s at the rear wheels. Chart to be posted soon. On last dyno pull the turbo blew up. It was a cheap Rock Auto rebuilt unit. I should have known better. Oh well I ordered a new Stock turbo and as Wayne suggested I am replacing the down-pipe with a bell mouth Invidia unit. This will allow more HP above 5000 RPM. My FFR modified unit is too restrictive. Wayne and I went to lunch in his LS3 powered Porsche Carrera. Wow is that thing fast! Also saw the 427 Ford GT replica. Too cool! Thanks to Very Cool Parts and Wayne Presley for all their help and great work!

Pulled the bad turbo off this morning. It looks like the intake nut came loose and caused the failure. I cleaned everything up. Flushed out the oil system and changed oil and filter. All new parts this time. Runs great! no smoke. I will be getting 3" muffler to go with 3" Invidia out pipe. Hope to go- cart later next week.

Good day today! I finished up my 3" pipe and muffler, Sounds great! I also installed the shuttle heater valve. Due to the way the T-Stat works on the Subaru's you must have this style heater valve or the car will over heat. Thanks to Wayne Presley for the heads up on this. I also got the body sides and rear bumper installed. Makes me feel like real progress, LOL.

I was able to get the front fenders, front grill mounted. I also mocked up hood and trimmed sides for better fit. I had my body/paint guy come over and we decided that we will glass the top to the sides for a cleaner look. This will mean a lot of work and paint the body on the chassis. But we both feel the end result will be worth the trouble. Stay tuned, LOL.

Spent the last few days working on the doors. I countersunk the screws as well as moved the lock mechanism on the latch so it is inoperable. Since I am using remote door openers and will have no outside door handles there is no need for a lock. Also I will be using a directly attached knob to open door on the inside, Like the 33. This eliminates the cables and stock inside handles. I got the passenger side mostly done for now.

Been working on doors, hood pins, door openers, and finally top fitment somewhat. To say the body and top is not symmetrical is the understatement of the century, LOL.:p This one is the worst body fitment of the 4-818's I have built so far. I had to add shims on the drivers door to get alignment. I have had to trim so much from the top so far as well as the metal brackets. The passenger side bolted up to the frame upfront perfectly. The drivers side is so far off I am going to have to redrill the bracket. I will document later. I most likely will not be doing much work over the next few weeks due to the holidays.

Today I mounted the headlights and wired up the RF one. I used 8-32 screws & locknuts. I will black out that area and mount the lens so it is removable later on. I wish the 3 led's were yellow and the single one was white. That way I would have wired the 3 to the T/S and the 1 to Parking light.

Installed trunk with slight modifications. Trunk is really designed for S model. I added an aluminum rail and deleted the 2 side parts. I will seal inside and cover with carpet. The underside I will add heat reflective material. It really stiffens the rear of the body, IMO.

Might be the first c I've seen with a trunk, looking good!

Do you have a link to the fog lights you're running?

I really like the looks of your fog lights, and plan to do something similar.

The lights from eBay appear to be the same as these, although the marketing is different.

The photos of the lights are likely the same, as the right most LED in the middle string is mounted a little crooked in all 4 lights. The reviews on Amazon are mixed. I hope you have good luck with them.

Thanks for sharing so many useful posts. They are so helpful to a novice like me.

Been working on a few things lately. I made an air box for the air to air intercooler. It has hoses that will connect to roof vents. Also made a heat shield for RS inner CV joint. I also engine turned rear aluminum frame for rear window. Last I installed heat shield on muffler. I will do same for bottom of trunk later.

Thank goodness you keep building these things... More ideas I'll probably steal. =)
Really like the CV joint heat shield, simple and elegant solution.

Super cool. I did the exact same muffler solution in getting my go kart track ready last year. We had a bit of an unfortunate engine demise and it is taking time to get the replacement. So I am hard at work getting the body all mounted, but I haven't really been able to start working the rear bumper itself yet and have been thinking the muffler would need to be redone. It appears it is going to line up with the trapezoidal cutout pretty well.

Worked on making the engine area look a little better from above. The WRX engine is compact, powerful, however IMO it is fugly. Since the S model rear parts cover this area I felt it would be OK to do a little cover up. I made some removable panels that allow for access to fluids and such from above when the rear hatch is open. IMO it looks much better. The Spectre hoses hook up to the roof vents perfectly. The intercooler is not centered in the hatch opening. I will tint the 3 rear outside windows as dark as allowed by law.

Finally had a warm day today. I was able to put truck bed-liner on the inside of the front hood, rear bumper and both front fenders. Also siliconed the front headlights from the underside.

Today I changed out the small lights in the front headlight area. I really did not like the FFR supplied ones and wanted 3 turn signal lights and one parking light. Special thanks to Scott Meyer on where to get these much brighter lights. I also lizard skinned the trunk and added heat insulation where the muffler is close. The top is not very close to the rear bumper. I will need to do some fiberglass work so I get a nice gap back there.

No worries on the light product link, glad they worked out for you! FYI the pictures aren’t coming up today on this post…

Also I had similar displeasure with the gaps on my “S” trunk lid and panel gaps on the rear sides.

Thanks. I think I fixed it now.

I cut the rear of the top. I then set it back for a proper gap to the rear bumper. I used aluminum and screws. The game plan is the grind the underside of the screws flush and glass the gap from the bottom. Then remove the aluminum and finish up the top with glass and filler. IMO this should not have to be done if the top was made to fit properly. But as it is with FFR lately it is a necessary project.

I like your approach, hadn’t thought of this when I spent hours extending my trunk lid…

I glassed in the gap from below. Trimmed it up. I filled in voids near the front brackets with foam and panel bond. I cut holes in roof air vent to feed my intercooler. Then I coated the roof area with 3 coats of Lizard Skin sound deadener. I also coated the rear underside with bed liner coating. Once all is dried and sanded, I will flock the interior part of the roof. It will have the look of black suede.

Here is the area that the headliner aluminum would normally go. After flocking and vacuum, it looks like suede. Here is what some looks like with glue before adding flock. It is a thick , black glue like stuff I install with a brush. You add flock ASAP and let set up for 10-24 hours.

How do you plan on making the headlights removable and appear seamless? Are you planning to use black screws? Looking to tackle headlights in the next month or two and want to get my plans made. So many options ...

I am going to have the fender area blacked out as well as the area of the lens blacked out where the screws go. However the screws will stay S/S color.

I finished up the underside of the roof. Flocking came out really nice, IMO. I reinstalled roof and started on drivers door power window. The FFR manual is really lacking any good advice on this IMO. I did borrow some ideas from others on using S-10 guide rails. They are the exact right curvature. I cut them in half and trimmed away what I did not need. I still have to make the front rail. Not sure if I will use the S-10 rail or maybe something different. I am not using the FFR felt on the window opening. I will be using felt from Steele products. So far the operation and sealing to the roof opening looks promising. Here is some photos for now.

Wow, that flocked interior looks great! I may need to borrow (shamelessly steal) that treatment if I ever de'roof my 818.

Question, is that just a blown application of flocking material using an adhesive? I have done that to my dashboard, and I found the flocking material I used (ebay special) has faded over the past few years.

I bought all my stuff from these folks. I did the entire interior of my 35 and it has held up fine.

Wallace, lookin good! I hate to admit it but I’ve spent about 6 weeks on each door! Lots going on inside there. I really couldn’t imagine building any car with a fully finished carbon fiber body like Dave was planning for the new F-9 project.
