Everything looks good, except....

I will post a new vid showing the redo of the front left fender. Basicly I widened the nose to cover both wheels. The hood wants to rest with the right wheel covered and the left not. No big deal, move it over. What I did not see, from not haveing the wheels on it doing the bodywork, was the very crooked and different angle line side to side. When you sight down the front of the car you see the right fender leaves a nice vertical line with the tire and a small amount of taper at the bottom. The left, line of sight is in and out with a very agressive taper at the bottom showing so much more tire. So now they match with both sides covering the wheels. I didn't have to cut anything, just added to it, the inside is untouched.

Another video done. I'm in the middle of prepping the body for paint right now.

Hey Gene. Your car looks awesome. As someone who has stared at the GTM for over two years, I can see you have perfected it.

You covered the caster. The other thing to consider is you will not run the toyo r888 with 0 camber. I ran he RA1 s and will also run the 888s with 2.7 degrees of camber on the 245s. I'd figure that you will run 1.5 to 2 degrees on the street.

That brings the top of the tires in a noticeable amount. It wil be fine as it will be the same on both sides but since you have optimized everything. I wanted to point it out before you paint.

Same in the rear. But not as much of a change.

Looking great!

Thanks John,

Yep I do realize that when I dial in the camber it will change the profile, as well as the toe, but it will change even. I set it at zero just because that is the easiest for me to find, (I used a level for camber, and sighted down the tires to get the toe). I have an appointment on the 21st to get it aligned and the corner wheights set.

So you think about 1.5 camber, is that front and rear? What is the majic number for the rear toe, .125?

RumRunner

Gene,

These are my alignment numbers for my Gen2. I think the rear camber is a bit high but that's the best I could do. With these settings at a ride height of 4.25" the car is very stable (at least up to 100 mph). I have about 800 miles on it now over the last 2 months and am very happy with the feel of the car. Hope that helps.

Front: Toe: R: 1/16" L: 1/16" Total 1/8"
Camber: R: -0.61 deg. L: -0.63 deg
Caster: R: 5.72 deg. L: 5.72 deg

Rear: Toe: R: 1/16" L: 1/16" Total: 1/8"
Camber: R: -1.14 deg L: -1.11 deg

Gene I used this as my track setup. It's close to what Michael runs too.

It was plenty stable up to 155.

I'll make a few tweeks taking some rear camber out and adding some more caster up front. This setup was fine so I didn't mess with it last year . This year I'll work on fine tuning.

Left Front Right front
caster -3 caster -3
camber -2.8 camber -2.7
toe -1/16 toe -1/16

Left Rear Right Rear
camber -1 camber -1
toe -1/16 toe -1/16

Gene,
If the fisheye only happened at the end it could have been caused by moisture in the compressed air, too late to do anything about it now but maybe worth checking if you need to respray that a water trap is fitted and empty. I have no experience of spraying in really cold climates but have had to stop spraying my ute for about a week because the water trap was filling up so fast on warm (25-30 deg Celcius) humid days.

When it all seems to be going wrong or not to plan and I find it hard to get motivated I find looking back at what I started with and where I'm at gets me back on track, you have the advantage that you have recorded it all and you have come so far and you're getting closer everytime you work on your car.

I can't wait to see the finished car.

The booth I was in is top notch, they never have any trouble. Besides, the hanging parts and the hood came out great. I really blame it on myself. The first part I sanded and washed was the body, I used the same wash mit and bucket that my boy uses for washing his car, full of wax I assume. I went ahead and did some more body work on the body and finnish sanded all the parts. I went to wash them and said to myself, hmm I better not use that mit. So I grabbed a rag and washed out the bucket real good. I really think thats what happened. I'll probably respray it in my garage and it will be fine.

Thanks Mick

Hey Gene,

Don't beat yourself up too much over the fisheyes. I've done everything by the book, on preping a car for paint, and then have some balloon head cut loose with some silicone that floated in the air, across the shop, through the shop doors, and land in the paint shop, and get sucked into the booth, while I'm spraying.

Just file it under S_ _t happens. OR........

Your GTM is pissed at you for letting it sit while you worked on your sons VW! Just Saying

Hi Gene,

Heard you say you had about 1K in materials on the video if I heard that correctly (listened twice). Is that including paint? I thought it was much more usually. What did you use?

Too bad about the contaminants but it doesn't look like you will have too much trouble fixing it. When you're expecting perfect anything else is a bummer!!!

I've enjoyed following your build. Thanks, WEK.

Ron, you crack me up. I hope the GTM isn't pissed at me, but maybe it is. Your starting to make me think it could be true. From all the time I've been spending on the GTM, my truck is pissed at me now, it has no power, can't even spin out in the mud. I let my daughter use my 02 BMW to let her nephew take his driver license test, she called me on the side of the road, smoke coming out of the hood and it just free revs in gear, it's pissed. And now my wife tells me her SRX was trying to die yesterday, it's pissed too. I tell ya, I just need to slow down and take care of things. I'm running around like a zombie. I'm doing nothing Sunday but watching the 500.

Are you a painter? I've seen painters so mad about silicone in the shop, it seems like it takes weeks if not months to go away.

Yes including paint. I'm useing PPG urethane enamel, factory pack black. The other color I had would have been 1500 just for the paint. Red is very expensive, black is not, different colors cost.

Well, cool, I feel a coonection to you then, I grew up in body shops. I started out watching my dad fix cars, using lead, asbestos, no wire feed welders, back in the day. Back then, if you brought in a 5th of whiskey with your car we waved your deductable. I used to watch my dad mix paint with a cigaret in his mouth. It's kinda funny how there is such a love hate relationship between bodymen and painters.

* I'm not a painter, I'm a bodyamn. I have much respect for painters.

Oh yeah the good old days, when a fifth would get you somewhere

And yes I got along with some of the bodymen that I work with.....Usually after an understanding of the certain order of things that were allowed and not allowed were established. As you know the rule of the shop...

The last one to touch/work on the car it owned it. But working with the bodymen of the shop, I can safely say that the come back, or worse the never leave cars were very low. We lived by the watching each others backs code

BTW: Did you use single stage or two stage paint, and how many coats did you say you put on before you pulled the plug ?

Single stage, the first time 2 coats. The second time the 3rd coat went to shi. I don't know why the sealer went on fine, and the fish eye came on more and more after each coat. Normaly I would see it right from the start.

Okay it sucks but it's not the end of the world.

Sounds like the incoming air might have picked some contamination. One time I worked close to a fast food restaurant, and when the wind changed direction along came the grease that was kicked out of the exhaust fan. Another time it was a diesel truck that was left to idle right outside of the paint booth intake vent.

On the bright side of life, after you wet sand the body and get rid of the fisheyes, when you go to repaint it, you'll have a nice solid hardened base to lay the new coats over. If your real lucky it might flow out and set up so good that you might not have to any buffing on the main body. Of course your next worry is to get the rest of the panels to look as good.

Remember to use a good grease and wax remover/cleaner, dry it off really good, and open a new tack rag just before you pull the trigger

Good Luck

You saw that huh, I have a story for that too. After seeing the carnage of the first 2 coats on the body go to hell, we kicked in the bake cycle and got it out. We put in the hood and doors in and tryed figure out what went wrong. My buddy and I, both body guys, decided that I had my air preasure to low and I was trying to put it on too wet for the first coat. Maybe giving the fish eye too good of a home to live in. So the plan was to put it on kind of dry on the doors and hood, the first coat, then lay it on . It didn't come out so smooth. But I got lots of material on it, and I know how to get rid of orange peel, and I'm a pro of getting runs out, Iv'e had some major practice.

I'm going to sanatize that thing with borax or something, go over it real good with a scuff pad.

Thanks Ron

Well, things went pretty well at the tuner. I have a couple of things to iron out but all in all a good day. I got 440 to the wheels. Torque starts at 300 2000 rpm, then a nice flat line at 400 pretty much out to 6500. So I guess if you take the 550 horse, at the crank, Trick Flow kit and take off 20% it should put me at 440, so I'm happy. I drove it real quik with my boy, what a hand full. Quarter throtle and it's going bullistic. The idle is sick, very loud.

The GTM has one of the hardest, if not the most difficult bodies to paint. It may be small, but man it's got more curves, rolls, nooks and crannies than you can throw paint at.

Hi Gene,

Love the black. I wasn't sure if that was a reflection in one part of your video. That's pretty close to perfect, I think! Looks like a lot of work. I have a couple of questions. Did you use a two stage rubbing compound/polish system? I saw one by Turtle that's supposed to be good. Also, are you using multi-stage grades of paper or just 1500 to cut? Did you use the glazing putty trick to cut down your runs? I heard you say it was very tedious to get them out without over sanding the surrounding area (like "dinosaur bone" extraction). I'm using lacquer for a check coat. Got the worst orange peel I've ever seen!!! Thanks and good luck with the polishing, WEK.

While I was in the middle of the coat I didn't realize what ws going on until I went back in to check, I couldn't see!! I ran the crap out of it. I had another fan, so that was good.

I'm useing 1500 to cutt it down flat and then 2000 before I polish. Then I use a 3M rubbing compound to cut the scratchs and then a glaze polish to get rid of the swirl marks. Also useing different pads with the different compounds. I had lots of orange peel also, thats what I used for a guide coat for removing my runs. I used a real small file, it worked good.

Gene,

Don't worry about the runs in the paint. I usually tell people when they ask," How come you ran the S**t out of the paint and my answer is, " The runs are there to show that I care enough for the customer to apply more than his fair share of paint to his car" or "I like to give the customer more than what they paid for"

I think I would have come to the conclusion that I needed to call it "ok" knowing I would have to re-paint it a long time ago... I'd be toooooooooo anxious to get some shake down & track miles on mine... I am actually planning to put mine in a pretty heavy epoxy primer coat, get it out & put some miles on it... get the bugs worked out, turn some track laps & get as many of the "shake down nicks & scrapes" out of the way before I put the finish paint on her....

Gene,

I love black. Its painfully hard to get a super perfect job, but boy it looks great.

I can see how well you perfected all the panels. The car is going to be a stunner!

Hey look at it this way. your paint is nicer then 99% of street cars out there. Only top quality show cars might be better. Trailer queens are nice, but the GTM needs to be driven! You have the perfect paint for the aplication.

I hope I can make my car look that nice some day.

True, but keep in mind this is an exception not a rule. White, on the other hand will show nothing. Different colors will show more. And if I would have left some orange peel, 1500 would have been fine. But on black, sanded down that flat, it all shows.

Gene,
I watched your latest video and wanted to pass on some tips for your console project.

Covering the piece…. Unless you have some special tooling to form the material and accounted for the material thickness during the mold process, you will not be able to successfully cover the tablet pocket you’ve created. I would prep and paint that area or the entire piece. With your skills I’m sure it would turn our very nice.

Since you want to keep the tablet removable, you have to address how it will stay in the pocket until you are ready to remove it. Magnets! Scosche makes a nice magnetic mount that works well for this type of setup. http://www.scosche.com/mounts/mmsurface
One removal option is to create a place, on the side of your pocket, for your finger to grip the side for removal of the tablet.

fastthings
05-29-2014, 10:36 AM
Nice tips, I saw guys using the magnets. I haven't got to the type of covering yet, but yes, I will need to allow tollerence for any thickness of material, also tucked in around the ISIS.

I had to get a different Tab, the Tab4 does not have MHL, I got the Tab pro 8.4, it does. I like it better anyway, but I will have to redo the cradle. I am also going to add a spot for RL controller, Audison remote controller, and the display/controller for the Passport 9500ci.

I like the finger spot idea to get the tab out, thanks.

* The tab has the metal for the magnet in kind of a strange spot for what I need, but I still may install one anyway, it would help.

WOW.

Just finished a week long marathon from the first video. This project may not be going as fast as you'd hoped but she's gonna be absolutely stunning when you are done.

As I watched the last few videos when you were fabricating the new console and installing components for a very high end sound system and all the other toys you have crammed in there I remember you saying something about leaving the stock interior as it came from FFR. With the dash vinyl bubbling and the heavily modified center console, you might as well go for it now with a high end interior and a lot of sound deadening to match the caliber of the rest of the car.

I must admit that I watched in horror LOL as you laid down hundreds of miles of wiring and stuffed it into every nook and cranny of the car. Boy how I long for another completely analog car with the only thing electronic being the stereo.... Hmmmm probably showing my age now LOL

Well done sir.

nice job, great video on the final stages before body goes on. One question though. those inner fender panels that you install on the rear, will they not get in the way when trying to install the body. Also the front close out panels just under the windshield area too.

keep up the good work. looking forward to see the body on.

fastthings

Only the ones that are right in front of the rear tire are in the way. I have them set up to come on and off with bolts, that way I can get in there and service things. But remember I installed those after I put the body on for the first time. The fact that I had everything trimmed and set up prior let me have all the other on with no problem. The body rested on them just like it was meant to be.

Then the Project Enhancement Brothers showed up at your door to help you with the build.

I had them show up on a project I did once, when they asked what time frame I was looking at, the one brother, I believe his name was Fricken Enhancement, laugh and said, Here’s Your Sign

Thanks Tino,
your right, it is a no,no, to deface the plate. I think I can get away with the camera on the top, but the bottom hole I think would be too noticeable. So I may end up making it removable.
I want to make a little stash for my tie downs and toe hooks, and always have them in the car, I could even have a wrench stored also to use for the plate removal.

Gene,

I want to second Mikes comments.

I'm in the middle of my build now and continue to refer to your videos to get an idea of the pitfalls that await! Made a few of the mistakes you made before I started watching. Example, I fit the hatch almost exactly the way you did BEFORE I checked the glass fit and had to rebuild the edges. Watching the videos ahead of time will prevent mistakes like that!

Knee deep in fiberglass dust at the moment cutting, glassing, grinding and have gleaned some useful tips from your techniques. I'm bad about just taking pictures and posting my progress, let alone taking the time to film a video.

So, I also thank you for taking so much time to share your build.

Hey Gene,

I made metal clips to attach under the edge of the dash, center and on both sides that clips the dash to the lip of the body and glued 1/8" black rubber padding to the edge of the body to absorb any squeaks and vibrations. The dash snaps over the edge of the body to lock in place.3683336834

Excellent work Gene! Wow that was a lot of work. Howevver the progress is outstanding. It's so hard to make things look like they came that way out of the box. My measure of success is when you can't tell what was added or changed. Of course if you see a before and after its obvious but when you just show the after and folks don't see the before its impossible to see what was changed. Well done.

Incredible work Gene. I'm around the same spot of the build on my GTM. The hardest part for me is knowing where to draw the line. I want it to be nice but I just don't want to work on this thing for another year. If I try to keep up with your quality of build, I will never finish. Your Crazy!
Thanks for taking the time to make, and post, these videos. As much as it hurts for me to watch, they are very informative for me and future builders.

Hey Gene,
Very nice work as usual, don't know if you are done with your interior you were talking about tight coat for finishing your glass work. Duratec surfacing gel coat sprayed with a 2.5mm tip gun works well and it is easy to sand and it fills all the little pin holes. A quart of duratec goes a long way and you can get a 2.5mm gun on ebay under $30.00 dollars.

Same thing as what I used on the body, fiberglass, bondo, and primer. None of it is made for plastic, but if it sticks it sticks. The fiberglass does bond to it pretty well, so did the bondo and primer.
Products are available for plastics, but none of stuff I did is structural, so no big deal.

Camber is about -3/4 front and rear. Caster is equal at about 4.5 I think. One side started at 8, thats why it wanted to dart into the ditch, and the cross weight was way off.
It feels real good now.

Hey Gene,

Congratulations on an awesome build ,the car looks and sounds great!

I got my plates a couple of weeks ago and still working on a few details and issues. I used the same alignment settings as you just a little more caster and weight in at 2690 with low fuel same balance as well it felt very stable. I changed the ride height a 1/4"and doing hole shots and hitting the gears change the rear camber settings making the car very squarely not a good thing. The stock camber bolts don't hold well under extreme conditions. I had made a set of camber plates and was waiting to find the right set up before installing them, I set the front bump steer and need to do the rear bump steer before the final alignment.

I had mine weighed again this past weekend. Came in at 2480 with about 8 galloons of fuel. I have minimal sound insulation (spray on from GTMatt) no wipers or motors, no door glass or power window motors and ultra light weight 18" wheels and tires. It had weighed in at 2247 when I first started to drive it (be it with about 1cup of gas in he tank at the grain scale, missing a few things like splitter, rockers, seat belts and the other stuff mentioned above) but I thought is was too low figuring others were coming in at 2600 +/- . The new weight of 2480lbs seems far more accurate, even if nearly 60lbs of that is the extra gas. Still happy I made it under 2500lbs, not so sure if I would with door glass and motors installed though. Still not sure why I am 200lbs lighter then you guys??

200 lb.'s of interior, other than that I'm not sure what the difference would be. The dyno mat stuff I used, weighed a lot. I did add some weight. That puts me at about 1 hp for 5 lb.'s

Hey guys, I am having trouble calibrating my fuel and speedo gage, most likely two different issues. I'm more concerned about the fuel, I have ran out a couple times.
I get a floating needle, it did that right from the start. I have calibrated the empty and full points. Read the directions and watched Speed Huts video.
I check ohms behind the gage at empty, 226. I fill the tanks and still get 226. I check at the sender and get 226. I can ground to the frame and still 226.
Is my sender bad?
What so you guys think.

The speedo wonders around also, I have calibrated it 3 times. Maybe my sender is to far away and not completely centered. Is it that critical?

LCD Gauges
07-14-2015, 12:23 PM
You are probably measuring the wrong two wires on the sender. You need to find the "wiper" wire of the sender which indicates the float pisition.

It seems like you are measuring the two wires that span the entire resistor.

Interesting, I thought I checked different combos, I'll check again.
I have 3 posts, I can't see the top to read. I have one wire in the middle, and one to the left.
And I have the aluminum tanks.
Any suggestions?

This is similar to your float wiring. You need to find the middle wire that moves with the float.

One more thing, went to charge the AC. The connection to the top of the canister, that sits by the battery. I must have the wrong gasket. I have the green oring, and it's very loose.
Any thoughts.

Here is an update of sorts, I love it.
What a frickin blast. I have minor things to redo, but all in all, good to go.

One thing, Mendeola currently has my box. It is popping out of third, life in the fast lane, they'll fix it.

Gene, well I watched all your videos in a weekend and that's what got the fever going, now that I have a GTM in my garage I'll have to re-watch them. I'm actually excited to watch them again, hopefully I'll pick up even more info now that I'm a little more informed. Thanks again for taking the time to make those videos and post them, and that thank you goes to all the build logs out there, I've read them all lol

My pleasure, if you watched them all, you heard me many times give thanks to the guys on the forum. I can imagine the insight you would have going into a build after watching, cool stuff. This forum has almost got this build refined, good bunch of builders.

I like it that I get people riled up, good luck on the build.
