Earlier today this car, which was restored by the team at Legendary Motorcars, sold for $5,400,000.00.
Shown below is the auction as it went down:

https://youtu.be/W86oOVsfpVM

The car had been altered over the years by Carroll Shelby but was solely owned by him until his death.
This is how it looked back in 2016 when I fell in love with the No Scoop Look sporting side-pipes and red war paint.

https://rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/mo16/monterey/lots/r194-1965-shelby-427-cobra-csx-3178/380123

Hats off to Peter Klutt for knowing what the car was really worth when he bought it for $1,375,000.00 back in 2016.
He obviously knows his business because gambling with that much money can't be easy.

Thanks for sharing. Beautiful Cobra that went for crazy money. Even crazier is that someone has 5.4 million to spend:eek:

It is truly a matter of scaling because there are guys and gals that have that kind of money to spend.
I'm just glad Carroll Shelby (The Man, The Myth, The Legend) dreamed big and gave the world the Cobra that I feel is the most iconic car in history.
I'm equally glad that Dave Smith decided to create Factory Five Racing so we could know what it's like to build and drive our replica roadsters.

11 years later, during uncertain economic times, he's doing it once again.

The high hammer prices across the board surprised me. There seems to be a LOT of money sidelined out there that folks are looking to put somewhere.

Yes, I agree that prices are up for sure. Any resto-mod muscle car was six figures. All mustangs went for strong money, in addition to the usual high price muscle cars, plus anything Chevy, which never ceases to amaze me. Oh, and clones! I can't believe the prices of cloned COPOs, RA GTOs and the like. Plus 10/12% buyers fees.

Unreal what the Novas are bringing as well. Even the 30's\40's street rods did well after years of price declines

Thanks for sharing that GoDadGo. I should have been watching the auctions last night. Not that I could afford the 5.4million. Amazing machine. That car is beautiful and is far better after the repair and restoration in my opinion. I can see what you mean about those cleaner lines without the hood scoop from the Sotheby's picture. I really like that charcoal color other than the previous red. Seems more refined now. Is it just me or does it look like the front and rear fenders have a tiny bit more flare to them to snug those wheels in a bit more? Maybe I'm just not as familiar with the cobras but I do like how the wheels are tighter under the arches. Many of the modern replicas I have seen at the car shows like to go wider wheel base.

I feel sorry for the car in a way, it will not likely ever see another highway. What it was born for. Like a caged animal that once owned the jungle. I have animism and believe everything I have should be used as it was meant to be. Hope it ends up in a museum at least where it can be wondered at. Beautiful thing.

Every time I see one of those street 427s I wonder if I should have gone with no scope and under car exhaust. Such a beautiful car! Maybe next time.

If I had more time and more money I'd love to build a traditional Blue MK-4 with Wimbledon White Stripes and a Hood Scoop so I totally understand your dilemma.

Curious about how you would route the exhaust under car. Not a whole lot of clearance!

Spintech low profile mufflers & oval tubing have been used by more than a few Factory-5 family members.
The car shown below was built by 65 Cobra Dude (Henry) who is a professional builder.
That car had everything you can stuff in a Roadster including AC & Heat!

Nice! It’s an art to shoving 30 lbs of **** into a 10 lb bag!

Remember that the original Cobras had much more ground clearance, and higher side height. One of the original write-ups measured 7"of ground clearance.

Vspeeds did a particularly nice job with under car exhaust on the 289 USRRC:

That exhaust still comes out the sides before the rear. You do get the non-side pipe look but not the benefits of reduced dB when the exhaust comes out the rear, away from your ears.

In that color it looks like James Bond should be driving it.

EDIT: for the record, I made my James Bond comment before watching this video!

I saw from more than one builder doing under car exhaust that routing all the way to the back was too difficult and not worth it.

Yea, I saw that. How did they do it originally? Was it a combination of much higher ride height and what looks like a 1.75" exhaust?

The only thing I’m certain of is they didn’t do it with a FFR IRS and Russ Thompson drop trunk mod.

I'm certain Peter Klutt overrestored the hell out of that car, but I really like the clean look with no side pipes, hood scoop and roll hoop for that matter. I'm a newby but I notice that the original Cobras seem to have a lower stance especially in the back. I think the replicas fill out the rear fenders better but is there a structural reason for the higher tail?

Our replicas have adjustable ride heights because of the KONI Coil-Over set up.
Shown below is my car which is set around 4.00" Front and 4.40" Rear.

I've seen several MK-4 Roadsters higher and lower.
It all depends on what the owner prefers the ride height to be set at.

Most guys here put rake in. I took mine out searching for rear grip during autocross. Definitely better either level or a little squat for my setup and driving style.

I watched that on Youtube. That car went for about 1.5 million more than I thought. Shows you what I know.
