I'm going to MVA in Md this coming Tuesday to do the inspection and titling work. Tuesday is the only day they do it. Caddy Dad if your listening, did you get historic or street rod tags for your car? I made a dry run this past Tuesday to make sure I had all my ducks in a row and I think I do. I spoke with the guy who does all the inspections (very nice and helpful)on assembled vehicles and he said he does between 50-60 FFR cars a year which shocked me. I am hoping to be able to get historic tags which will take it out of the system for state inspection or emissions. If everything goes as planned I'll take the car back home and strip the body off and finish the body and paint work. All my gapping and adjustments are done, kudos to the guys who do this work, and as soon as it warms up a bit I'll paint it and hopefully it will turn out decent. It will take me longer because it not something I do all the time, or for the last 25 years but I'll get it done. MVA is a big milestone and hopefully it will go well. I'll let you know.

How did it go at the MVA? did you go to the one in Glen Bernie? I am just wondering because that is where I will have to go and your experience there.

I won't be going till this coming Tuesday the 19th. But I'll let you know. It always makes me nervous dealing with them, and yes I will be going to Glen Burnie. The trooper I spoke with was very nice and helpful as he could be, he gave me his card and said to ask for him, he is the only one who does it there. I don't think there will be an issue on the inspection side. They are only looking or stolen parts. They check serial numbers on engine and chassis. He was well aware of FFR cars and complimented them on the quality of the cars. I personally am pushing to get historic tags as they eliminate the need for state inspection and emissions. I know Caddy Dad on here got historic tags just by asking for them when he went inside for titling. I was able to get some 1965 Md. tags that were refurbished and I want to use them on my car. I see them on street rods and hope I can use them on mine. I don't know the procedure to get them But I'm sure they will tell me one way or another if I can use them. I'll let you know how it went on Tuesday.

Hi ggunter,
I got historic tags. I didn't think street rod tags qualified for my roadster so I didn't ask. But maybe you're onto something there. I'm guessing you talked to the same state police inspector I had. I think his name was John? Nice guy and very helpful. Yes, I was nervous about dealing with the MVA too. My past experiences always ended up with me making a second trip :-(.
Good luck and keep us posted on how you make out.
Cheers!

Hey Caddy, yep the guys name is John he said he is the only one who does the inspections there. Very helpful. Did you just ask for historic tags? Technically our cars don’t qualify for them due to the manufacture date, but being a replica there may be a loophole. I have my car loaded on my trailer, what a pain due to the angle and I am hoping they let me put the trailer inside during inspection but I’m not counting on it, but it would sure make life easier. Is there a special room for titling or is it just the general titling services? I’m looking forward to be able to drive it on Tuesday.

Get there as early as you can. You line up according to when you show up. I'd be there an hour before their official opening time.

I'm not sure if they will let you pull your trailer inside for inspection. If you get there early, you can just take up two spaces with your trailer & tow vehicle. You'll probably won't even have to take it off the trailer. John should be able to do everything he needs with it on the trailer. There was no special room for titling. You just use the general titling services. When you get to the title service counter just ask if you can get historic tags.
Good luck!

Thanks Caddy your info took a lot of the stress out of all the things that were running through my head. I’ve heard some horror stories from other states and was really dreading going to MVA.

Went to MVA at seven this morning 1-19-21 sat till the guy came in at 8:30 . We never took the car into the state police shop. John came out and looked at the chassis number and the engine number, looked at my COO and the invoice for Blueprint Engines, checked the numbers against the paperwork, all good. He gave me a paper form for the main building. I had an appt for 10:00 am in the main building, they called my number I told the woman I need title and historic tags. She wrote up the paperwork told me $189.50. I wrote the check handed it to her and waited for her to do the tax on the 29,000 from FFR. She said thank you were all done......(so I said to myself if this is going to happen to me then I’m winning powerball tonight) then I said are you sure again she said yes.....so running all the scenarios in my head of things down the road when the auditors at MVA See that no tax was paid then I’m thinking fines and interest......so I told her there are taxes to be paid on the car, then she says” why didn’t you tell me” my head then spun around twice, I told her your the one working here, you saw it has a COO So you know it’s never been titled, then she got an attitude, I didn’t care at that Point I had my historic tags in hand I just had to write the check for $1900 bucks tax.So thanks to Caddy Dad for the heads up you were right it was easy ,even with all the COVID protection they have in place at MVA in good old Glen Bernie Md. one other good thing is they now have a 50 year historic tag and it’s only one tag so you don’t have to run a front tag anymore.

I am really glad to see this. We moved from Md in 2014 but I titled two FFRs there. They both were bought titled fom another state so it wasn't too bad. Then I helped a friend w/ a MkIV and he had problems because he used an engine he had pulled from his old Mustang maybe 5 years prior. He had then sold the chassis. So he had nothing to prove he owned the engine. It finally was resolved but it took him 3 months. I am especially glad that they have streamlined the historic tag deal. At one time you could get either historic or street rod tags. The rules changed etc and it was a real toss up as to how any one FFR owner would be treated.

When I went through my paperwork last week I found I did not have an invoice from BLUEPRINT because everything was done with credit card and internet, so I emailed Johnny and they sent me one in minutes. Point being the cop told me the engine number better be on the invoice. So if someone is going to use an engine other than one from an engine builder you better have some formal looking documentation or motorized bill of sale to go through easily. Technically these cars do not qualify for historic tags because they are supposed to be 25 years old and have no major modifications to them. It seemed to me that because the COO says 1965 replica they just look at that and never realize the manufacture date was 2020. But the real treat from historic tags is no state inspection and no emissions testing. Which is the real nightmare I was not looking forward to had I not been able to get those tags. 45 degrees yesterday but it sure felt good going for a ride legally. Now on to body work and paint...... UUGGGGHHHHHH

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, I have been in Charlotte on business for the last week.
I am glad to here that the process went pretty much smoothly for you. I haven't received my kit yet so it will be quite a while before I get to deal with them. I live way down here in Waldorf. Pretty much on the other side of the state from you.

Is your kit ordered? Do you know your delivery date? And as far as MVA went it was a cake walk. Just need your paper work in order. The cop told me about 70% of the cars that come through there are wrong in some way or another. From no paperwork to all wrong paperwork to stolen parts that they just take the vehicle. He showed me a photo album of confiscated vehicles that had stolen parts on them. Just make sure of your engine origin. The car has a COO and a serial that matches so no problem there. Good luck on your build.
