View Full Version : Floor Jack Recommendation?
I'm in need of a new floor jack. Anyone have any recommendations? I'd obviously prefer a lightweight aluminum one, but also want a very low profile to get under the cobra.
Thanks

Harbor Freight. I've had their 2 ton jack for many years and still going strong. Jack will get under the Cobra as is, but if you want to put a 2x6 under the cross frame to spread the weight then you have to get the front tires on a couple of boards to get some height.

I've been using these for years on the Cobra and Exocet. Watch the sales and pick them up pretty cheap. They are now on sale for $60. If I didn't already have three of them, I'd go buy another.
I have one of these that works great: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-917072 I have a similar one from Jegs I keep in my race trailer, also works great. The lightweight ones save your back.
There is also a lower profile one too if you really need that: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/pwb-620479

Purchased an AC jack 15+ yrs ago. Expensive but worth it. It’s very low (3in), long reach and high lift (29in).

Very easy to reach the diff or cross member. I have 6 tons stand that are very high and stable, it’s easy to work under the car.

They are heavy. For the track, I carry the common aluminum race jack.

I've got this one from Harbor Freight.

It works well for the Cobra, Baby Go-Dad's lowered Camaro, and Brother Go-Dad's Lowered Skunkworks Mecham Trans-Am.

This one looks suspiciously like a HF jack, at twice the money. ;)

The trouble with this one is the handle returns to vertical when released.

That is true! Seems like all of the HF jacks to that.

Hein-Werner has always been the preeminent jack... made in USA, long lasting, reliable and rebuildable. Prices reflect that too. Now, an asian company called Shinn Fu owns Hein Werner as well as other "quality" jack names. Shinn Fu also makes the jacks for many house brands too, Napa reportedly being one of them. Shinn Fu is even licensed for Proto Power which is a snap-on trademark (not sure how that works but its even on the Shinn Fu website)
I have a 25 year old Craftsman floor jack that finally stopped staying up. After a buttload of research, I found the craftsman pump was not worth rebuilding and the pump actually cross referenced to a Shinn Fu pump.
I do not know if Harbor Freight is made by Shinn Fu, but it might be.
All that said, the asian pumps are essentially non-rebuildable. Hein_Werner still is (maybe other brands too). I found a guy who rebuilds jacks and he told me he wont touch the asian jacks/pumps as they just wont ever be as good after a rebuild. Essenitally, buy a new pump or scrap the entire thing and buy a new one.
I have 3 jacks, a 25 year old craftsman, a 10 year old Hein-Werner and a 2 year old Daytona (the fancy yellow, snap-on clone jack from Harbor Freight). Of the three, I like the rapid jack feature on the Craftsman (I really love that feature), the dependability and quality of Hein-Werner and the smooth rolling of the Daytona. Best for the money is the yellow Daytona. I cannot say what the longevity of it will be, but I find myself using it a lot. All three jacks weight a ton, so if your going to be picking it up, look at the aluminum models.

My low profile HF jack does not.

I have 2 of the small HF jacks. One goes w/ me in the car to autocrosses and it's great because of the size and weight. But I notice that at home I like to use the full sized al jack similar to this.

Mine is not a rapid pump though, just a plain old style but it is aluminum. I am 72 and non-athletic so the larger jack being easier to pump works for me.

X2 on the HF jack that Go Dad has. It's very low and works great and reasonably priced. A friend gave it to me as a present and I love it. Very stable when up hi. Has the hi speed foot pedal and the hand pump. I'll get another one when this one goes.

I've got the same one, fits under the Cobra and the '67 Camaro chin spoiler

Shopped quite a bit and just settled a couple of days ago on a 2 ton Aluminum HF jack for $119 when my Torin 2.5 gave out. (The HF 2.5 was $144 at the time, but I was happy with the 2-ton: It is pretty light, which was one of my primary selection criteria). I use a HF 1.5 for the track and they are pretty good too and very compact although I saw one pretzeled last summer. So support the vehicle properly before climbing under, even for a second.
As mentioned, watch for sales and you'll get a good deal.

Another thumbs up for the Daytona low profile, had mine two years now replacing an old Craftsmen. I love it, great jack. I have two of the aluminum ones also, they mostly get used for going to the track, but occassionally it's nice to have two or even three jacks on hand.
