View Full Version : Time to buy new side pipes - which ones?

My original F5 Side pipes are spent. Still look good but must have zero baffling left in them. They are very loud. Was planning to just order new ones from F5, but I know others have gone with other options. Is there a better value with Gas-N or should I just stick with F5?. Also want to make sure fitment isn't going to be an issue. Appreciate your thoughts?...

Not sure what Mk you have as far as a chassis, but my vote is for the Gas-N sidepipes. They are truly works of art. They are nice and mellow, but as my neighbor says, roar loud enough to shake your soul when you step on it.

Mine is the MK3.1 Does it make a difference with the Gas-N pipes?

No. My experience with several sets is that you’ll probably need to modify the body cutouts and very likely need to use some combination of wedges &/or spacers to align them with the body. They’re beautiful and sound great though.

Mines also a Mk 3.1 and I made the change to gas-n a couple years ago. They really are nearly perfect. The fit was fine. I'm sure others would have redone the openings, but it was good enough for me. I believe I did order a couple wedges/spacers and used some but not all.

If you decide to go with the F5 ones again, there are probably a whole lot of people with unused or nearly new pipes sitting in their garage. It could be a lot cheaper than ordering from F5.

I'd be interested in that. However, I'm guessing that's because a lot of folks are moving away from the F5 Standard Pipes? If it's that big of a difference, I need to really check out the Gas-N option.

If you end up with Gas 'n pipes be sure to ask about the "touring" pipes if you want something a little quieter (-5 db). My car is only in Go-kart so I have very limited time with my Gas 'n pipes and a 427 but I will say they are loud, if I would have known about the touring pipes I would have gone that route.

6th or 7th vote for Gas’n. Look and sound amazing.

I had the FFR ones on and had planned to drive with them pre-paint (already had purchased the gas-n). After a day of driving I changed them after a splitting headache. The gas-n pipes are deeper and not as high pitched. Everyone has their own opinions but I personally think they are the perfect sound for this car. Mine is with a coyote so maybe results will vary. I have the regular pipes. They are gorgeous!

George is also a first class guy to deal with. Great service!

X whatever for Gas-N. Just needs a little love with the SS polish every once in a while. Sounds and looks are top notch.

OK, everyone has convinced me to go the Gas-N route. The next question would be.....which finish? I see they offer three choices - Natural Stainless, brushed stainless and Mirror finish. Looks like most people are going with Mirror Finish? Or is that too shiny?
Thanks for all the great input by the way.

Now that you're convinced, let me throw out some more chum. ;)

I replaced mine with Classic Chambered Exhaust mufflers. http://www.classicchambered.com/classic/cobra.html

Significantly reduced overall sound. And "softened" the sound, too. It had a lot less "blat" to it.

The Mufflers are longer, and parallel to the body. The tip matches the body lines better, and is angled down 45*.

This video does a good job of showing difference between Gas 'n standard vs touring pipes

That's awesome. Thanks for posting. Brian(who created that video) is actually in my Cobra Club. I'll have to reach out to him.

I'm in Sandy Springs and I just switched to GAS N from the stock F5 pipes. The Difference in Quality is instantly obvious. I went with the "Touring " option and I couldn't be happier. Much less raspy sounding but still loud enough when you get on it. If you would like to stop by and see, hear and touch in person, just PM me. I also have the F5 pipes which have 1000 miles on them if your interested.

Thanks for the offer. I may take you up on that. Are you around for the holiday's? I've already had Covid so I'm safe to be around :)
