Henry,

The system is telling me it needs 17 characters and this value is only 11.
Is that the response you are getting too?

Steve,

I believe they didn’t have 17 digit VIN’s in 1967.

Thx,

Henry

I just talked to my pal who has a 1969 Firebird and the Vin is 11 or 12 digits, definitely not 17.
His Corvette from 1973 has a VIN that is 12 digits.

Before 1981, the VIN format was not standardized and varied by manufacturer according to what I could find.

It looks like the 17 byte VIN came on the scene in 1981 because this is what I found.
The 10th character in the 17-character VIN represents the vehicle model-year.
This standard applies to vehicles built in or after 1981.

Note: VINs do not include the letters I (i), O (o), Q (q), U (u) or Z (z), or the number 0, so that they will not be confused with similar-looking numbers/letters.

Steve,

Does that mean Carfax doesn’t work on 11 digit VIN’s?

Thanks,

Henry

It is my understanding, carfax will only do cars from 1981 or newer.

As Chris stated, I think 1981 is the cut off year.
I tried to pull a report on my 1980 Z/28 since I still have the title and it wouldn't pull it.
That VIN is 1P87LAL548731 and since it is only 13 characters the system defaults to needing 17.
