Hey guys,
Still in planning stages and started to think about my ignition system....I am planning on using a Holley Sniper EFI system.
While reading, I read where the Sniper EFI can also control Timing though a Hyperspark distributor that they also sell. Seems very easy to set up to have the EFI control timing.
138992My question is has anyone actually used this set up and how important is it to control timing? I am going to need a distributor anyway at some point thought this might be the way to go.
Thanks
Brian

Using the Hyperspark requires a CD box. Holley does make a "plug-n-play" setup for this but you may need to tidy up the wiring due to a lot of excess loom you won't need depending on how/where you put the CD box. One other note: the Hyperspark does not have a cam sensor trigger so if you decide to upgrade at another time to a multi-port setup, you'll be purchasing another distributor. My advice is to get the Dual Sync (cost is nominal/same) and wire that in your Sniper setup. I've done several of these and they work fine. Either way, you will need a CD box for either. Controlling the timing through the ECU is very nice.

I used the full Sniper, Hyperspark distributor, coil and ignition box on my 347 with no issues. On the timing side, you need to go in and tweak some things to smooth out the transitions and if you want to get max out of the system then that is even more tuning

I am running the Sniper with the Hyperspark. Best decision I ever made. I initially purchased a dual synch but they sent the wrong distributor. Was looking at integrating it with my MSD Box and Coil but just figured might as well try the Hyperspard. Once set up correctly, I will never go back to anything else. (knock wood). The computer controlled timing is a top notch option for both the dual synch and the hyperspark. Resolving timing issues over my previous MSD setup brought my temperatures down about 15 degrees. Once we tuned the sniper beyond the initial tune we picked up about 30% better gas mileage over the standard tune, not to mention a hundred horsepower. I see a lot of people complaining about issues. There seems to be some QC problem but I haven't seen it with my setup. Looking for a common complaint, it appears to me is that most have RF or grounding problems with their install. These things are hyper sensitive to electrical issues.

I can't speak to much on experience since I'm about two weeks away from first start. However wiring was pretty straight forward. Since it sounds like you are starting from scratch I would recommend getting the hypersprk and CD box. They are made to work with one another and nomatter what you decide wiring is going to part of the solution.

I am running the Sniper with the Hyperspark distributor and the supplied coil driver. The Hyperspark ignition box has some poor reviews on other forums and I held off on that until they sort some stuff out. Timing control in the supplied Sniper programming is pretty basic but, the unit will except timing curves available from other Holley systems. I haven’t done that yet as I find the engine runs well and the car drives great with the supplied program. Not racing so I don’t need everything working at peak performance all the time.

PS my Hyperspark distributor came with a flat tappet camshaft compatible gear. Make sure you get the right gear for your cam.

Good point on the cam gear Norm, I had forgot about that and it was the most annoying part of the solution. I doubt many would use the gear it was supplied with. Gear was expensive and I had to get a shop to put it on (more $$) and even they had issues using proper tools.

Holley told me the same thing....said I would need to send it to MSD and have a hardened steel gear installed.
