Working on fitting my hood on the long edges which will require shims on the frame rails in spots to raise the body. I am thinking of using threaded rubber bumpers and tapping the frame rails to make adjusting the body height easier and fine-tunable. Thus my question, is this a dumb idea?

IMO, it's a dang good idea! I suggest adding some jam nuts to prevent the bumpers from moving.

thanks for the vote of confidence, yes although I didn't mention it jam nuts are part of the plan

I have a 68 Mustang project that I’m currently getting ready for paint. Just used these, good quality. This and some jam nuts would work well for your idea.

One thought... is the 3/4" tube thick enough to tap? Maybe rivnuts?

Yes, good catch, rivnuts would be the way to go

A question and a thought. Are you going to use these bumpers between the 3/4x3/4 steel tube and the underside of the body? The body floats above the tube and it's height is determined by the mounts at the quick jack/running lights. So the bumpers aren't really needed but they can't hurt. A note on fitting the hood. The sides of the recess that the hood drops into are not vertical. So when sanding the hood be sure to use something to prop it up so it is flush w/ the top surface of the body. If you sand it until the gap is correct but it is sitting down in the recess, the gap will be too wide when it is brought up flush.

I'm just sorry that you thought of it and I didn't!

Yes the body is held up by the quick jacks, on my car there is just enough sag on the long edge of the hood opening to cause some misalignment of the gaps, a slight push up from underneath is all that seems required for perfection

Although I can't brag about putting a Chevy in a Cobra every time I post .........

I don't think putting bumpers in is a bad idea. Rather than nutserts you could use threaded rod with a nut below and above the chassis.

those Scott Drake ones are nice!!! But pricey.
