Hey all,
After ordering my type 65 set up for a tko 600 I am thinking of switching to the 6 speed instead. The tremec magnum 6 speed seems to be the way to go, but are there any 6 speed alternatives that would be equally good but could be had for less cash?
I have a 2015 mustang engine already. I know I could get a used gertrag 6 speed from the same year mustang and buy an adapter kit...saw it once...but now don’t remember where. Once I factor in the adapter it might be a wash.

I also saw tremecs online used from Shelby mustangs like this one.

Has anyone gone this way before and have 2 cents to offer pro or con?
Thanks

A lot of the reason for the T56 over the TKO is shifting at higher RPMs. That's seemingly solved in the new TKX series but remains a 5 speed. Do want to address the concerns in the TKO or just have the extra gear?

I would like the extra gear...but have never driven either so I don’t have much to base things

The shifter mod you're probably thinking of is this one: https://www.formacars.com/store/mt82shifter. At $895 need to get a pretty good deal on the MT82 IMO. Plus don't overlook that the driveshaft will need to be adapted as well. Doesn't use the same slip yoke as TKO, T-56, etc.

So I've had both TKO's and now the T-56 in my Gen 3 Coupe. My TKO's were the modded ones from Liberty so shifted fine. I would say the T-56 shifts a little better. It's smooth and very precise. But not a huge difference. Can't say how it would compare to a stock TKO. I've never had a problem with RPM's with either. But then I'm a street driver and rarely get into the RPM range where it would be a problem. I do like the two overdrives on the T-56. 5th is nice for 55-60 mph country road cruising and 6th for higher speeds on the freeway. But did thousands of miles with the 5 speed TKO's and it's also not an issue. Our cars are so light and typically overpowered that a single overdrive is very acceptable. New TKO's are in the $2500 range. I see some are starting to show them out of stock. So that could be an issue. The new TKX is listed at $2,795. I'd sure go that way if you're happy with the 5-speed. The Ford version of the T-56 is $3,195. Good news -- it fits in the Gen 3 Coupe chassis just fine. No modifications and with room to spare. Driveshaft is still an acceptable length. Things to consider with the T-56 -- it is heavier. Some are sensitive about weight. Check bell housings. It's a different pattern than the TKO. For a Coyote, the only choice is a somewhat expensive QuickTime bell. Nice piece, but much more expensive than the previously available aluminum versions. The T-56 does have a solenoid lock-out on reverse. I like it a lot and have a speed module that locks out reverse any time the car is in forward motion. There are other less techie approaches. But needs to be considered. Finally, the ratios on the T-56 are different than the TKO. You may find a different optimal diff ratio for each. I have a 3.73 is my Coupe. Which I like. It very closely matches the TKO/3.55 ratios I had in my Roadster.

Good luck. Hope that helps a little. Not an easy choice. For me, I'd do the T-56 again without hesitation.

Since you're using a Coyote engine, the TR-3160 transmission will bolt right. The only adapter you would need is the driveshaft. But all you have to do is cut down a stock Mustang drive shaft.

Good points about the driveshaft and feedback for how the tko and t56 feel. I am planning on using the basic mechanical clutch set up. I am not sure if this changes things, but I am sure it can factor in. Time to ponder. I won’t be purchasing until spring. Any feedback welcome. Thanks all.

I've had the opportunity to drive three cars with T56's, three cars with TKO-600's, and two cars with ZF S6-40 gearboxes.

The T56's were in my brother's two T/A's and his C5 Corvette, the TKO's were all in Factory Fives, and the ZF gearboxes were in my C4 Corvette and my Dark Side Dart Cobra.
The T56's transmissions shifted nearly as well as my ZF's, while the TKO's were a bit clunky, but shifted pretty good so the real question is; Do You Want 5 or 6 Forward Gears?
I just think that a Type 65 Daytona deserves a T56 since you've got a caged car with good aerodynamics that sports a 95" wheelbase to easily make a T56 transmission fit.
As for me, I couldn't imagine having a car with a 5-Speed transmission since I owned my Vette from 1995 until 2018 which was replaced by my Dark Side Ride!
