Good morning from sunny The Villages, Florida.
My name is Bob Lupini and I am a long time racer. 40 years in drag-racing, I raced everything from Motorcycles to Top Alcohol funny-cars in NHRA and IHRA. About when sponsorship dried up in the early 2000's I took up vintage road-racing with HSR and SVRA. I race a Nascar Craftsman Truck and a 57 Corvette.

I was from the north east (Near Washington DC) and when I retired I moved to The Villages in Florida. In the transition I sold the cars I had to make it easier to move. Now that I am settled I have rented a real nice shop near by and made it my race shop.
It is time to now fill it with stuff to race. I have built a new dragster to run NHRA and want to get back to road racing.
That is where Factory Five comes into play.
I am thinking a challenge car with a LS3 or a Cadillac CTS-V engine.

What race series are people running with their cars?
What Combos are you using?

Thanks
Bob Lupini
Take a look at my Facebook page and see some of our (My wife Sally, also races from time to time and serves as crew chief and spotter)

Curious to see the responses to this as well. Ive seen a few classes floated around in here but not a whole lot.

Choice of the LS3 is a good option. If you go for a 5 speed you will have tons of room to put the engine where you want it. With the TR-6060/T56 the size of the bellhousing limits how far back you can get the engine, though its still well behind the front axle. I was glad I didnt move mine any further back, would have made it tough to still have a driveshaft.

I think you are asking about racing with groups like the SCCA or NASA. They have races around the country with different classes of cars. They have winners for each race and an end of the year national champ. That's not the kind of racing I do, it takes more money, travel, and time commitment than I have available. What I do is club racing, sometimes called HPDE. There are no winners with club racing, just tons of fun. If you are looking into SCCA, NASA, or the like, you will have to carefully study the rules for the group you want to join. There are strict rules about the car build, including which engine, mods to the car, and what tires you are using. These all go into which class you will run with. It takes a lot of study to get up to speed on this topic, and I'm very far from being an expert. You might try some of the other forums (e.g. Challenge Series) on this site to gain a more detailed understanding. The "other website" also has discussion about the Challenge Series and Road Racing.

Hope this helps,
Robert

My plan is for HPDE, not competition. I've run with private & dealer groups, PCA, VW group and the Great Lakes Mustang SVO/SVT ?? group.

I've run my previous Superformance cars at Grattan, Gingerman, Lucas Oil Raceway and VIR South Track and hope to do the same with the Challenge Car that is in (slow) build progress. Might try auto-x this time around and will make it to the drag strip at least once going for low 11s and mid 120s.

This build will be a streetable track car with wipers, lights and no top or heater but not a race car.

Not sure about Florida but there's a bunch of road track events during the summer in the Great Lakes region.

Chin (https://chintrackdays.com/) holds a number of HPDE track events in the south every year. I've known many who have enjoyed Chin track days. I first built my car in 2002 and lived in west central FL for many years. Sebring is a famous and fast track. It will challenge you and your engine/drivetrain in ways you didn't anticipate.

What mounts did you use? Dry Sump? My Craftsman truck had a Cup SB2 with a drysump. I would get 40 Hrs between top end rebuilds (I did them my self) I pump a bunch of oil on the valve springs to keep them cool, then pulled it off the valve covers with one of the stages on the vacuum side of the pump. Cool set up you have.

Thanks for the info

Bob,

You may want to reach out to Henry R.... (65 Cobra Dude)
He's located down in Port St. Lucie and has a shop down there too.
He has built every F-5 model and helped me a great deal.
You and he will hit it off because he's a racer too.

Dry sump, setup mostly pieced together from Aviaid. It should be a very streetable setup that just doesnt starve itself on track. Mounts I used are homemade, started with https://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/LSMOUNT.html? (these) and cut tiny little brackets to mount the sleeve to the factory five engine mount bracket. Engine sits as low as it can without poking the trans below the frame tubes.

My dry sump setup was custom built by my engine builder. The oil tank is a 3 gallon Peterson with custom brackets and mounts to the forward X-brace. It's combined with an Oberg filter and custom oil filter setup. It just barely fits in the engine bay area.
