Hey all have been following Factory Five for a few years and was thinking of building a Cobra roadster sourced from a local company here in Queensland Australia then I emailed Factory Five found out last week that a Company 40 minutes from where I live called Horsepower World engine builders with over 20 yrs experience had just signed up this year to bring in FFR kits and GUESS WHAT !! he has 1 other order for a Hot Rod so I have jumped straight in to get the 2 cars in 1 container arriving February 2021 and this is what I ordered.
This will be the 1st Gen 3 Coupe in Australia
Complete kit RHD package from factory 5
No powder coat ( want to clean up chassis maybe drill holes then do locally ??)
metric vintage guages
No seats or harness as wont pass Aus.. spec source local
power steer
side windows
3 Link rear with Moser Diff and axles brakes etc.
side windows
sway bars
Hallibrand 17 x 9 front and 17 x 10.5 rear & Mickey Thompson Tyres (way too expensive to source in Aus)

Engine Im considering is a Dart 427 with Cleveland heads , EFI and Hellcat ignition Hydraulic clutch and Tremech 6 spd.

Whilst very confident of building the car I dont have a lot of engine knowledge so works well to have the engine builder assist along the way as he is super keen to see the 1st coupe here in Aus turning heads.
I know exactly the colour and design I want attached a pic.
Have really enjoyed starting to read your threads and would love any advice even a small comment on 1 thing you would do different next time and why, that would really help a newby.

Thanks again for letting me share my first kit car challenge

Congrats on your decision!

I for one think you should add a little "Mad Max" to the design. Stick some razor blades on the Hallibrands, for example!

Interested to know how your sourcing the mustang donor parts? or is the equivalent local falcon parts that can be used?

I'm building a RHD version in the UK (arrived 4 weeks ago). There are a few things that you will probably need to do to it before you can get the steering to fit, as I found out from a friend.
I can let you know if your interested, its not difficult but easiest to do without anything on the chassis,
cheers
Phil

Will that oil pan clear the frame? The Gen3 Coupe has two square tubes of the chassis below/flanking where the crank pulley sits. You probably have clearance between them side to side, but unsure on the height. Typically see a rear sump Moroso pan that is super shallow so it doesn't hang lower than the chassis.

Looking forward to following along with the Aussie Coupe build!

Hi, interested to hear about your experiences with fitting the RHD steering, and other aspects of your build. I'll be starting my build hopefully within the next few months. Build date was early June, but waiting on all parts before shipping to NZ.

So chassis off to powder coating ( glad I didnt get FFR to do it as a bit of work cutting and grinding rhd steering) and powder coated some small bits myself in the shed, I bought the cheap kit off ebay, a little sand blaster and a 2nd hand 900 ml oven, goes off at 200 c in 10 minutes, works really well and so convenient to be able to coat as you go :-)

Yes I have been following your build, watching your body and paint has inspired me to have a go at that myself :-) , in last video I note you have the Russ thompson turn signal and NRG quick release so would love to see the video on how you installed them ??
Thanks

Progress......Very confusing manual shows shocks with body up but the spring fouls at the lower brackets on the rear with 3 link. Few bits missing from my kit which seems the norm but will have engine next week and no mounts. Fat tyres = expensive burnouts :-)

Hey all out there, nothing like 4 skin cancers to slow the build down please get skin checked and dont put it off as I wouldnt be finishing this build if I hadn't caught it early stages. face back and head.. all malignant melanomas, removed and cleared and healed up but not thrilled with the stapling job :-)

Anyway good news is I picked up the engine from Horsepower World who is the Australian distributor for FFR, got clutch/TKX midshift and bellhousing finally after 6 months wait, Custom seats made ready to cover, pedal box is in RHD with bit of cut and weld of LHD brackets, instead of rivets I am drill/tapping all 5ml stainless button head screws in the cockpit as heading to a race car look no carpet etc. lots of hours but its therapeutic after a while and I am only doin this once so why not......

FFR have no engine mounts (still backorder) so if anyone has a link/source for 351w mounts please help otherwise I will have to get some fabricated.

Good Lord that looks like a roofing contractor stapled your head! :)

Glad you caught it early and are on the mend. Are those custom seats you are making? Haven't seen a fiberglass shell for seats in other builds.

Yes have to use Aus design reg seats and these have ADR approval, cost $500 aud for shell and $1500 to cover but fit so well in the car compared to others I tried and they look the part155972155973155974

For motor mounts I just ordered some for Gordon Levy should have them in a couple days but they are supposed to lower the motor in the frame about 3/4” don’t know what that is in millimeters hehe. He is one of the supporting sponsors of the site so should be easy to find.

So I dont think my thread is for the experienced builders here as I am a 1st timer and posting stuff as I experience it, today found my dart block has 3 allen plugs on the back that foul the bellhousing plate enough to make it stand 4 ml off the block which would mean I would never get a good mate up for bellhousing so I split the difference and took a tiny bit off each head and drilled the 3 holes in the plate grinding the back of the hole slightly till it all mated up. Following you tube COBRA DAYTONA BUILD............... its all there but make sure you follow the steps using lube under head and locktite on the threads for your flywheel. Thanks heaps I found them but its a steel mount which I dont want to use, going with a rubber mount from summit racing.

I started another thread on RHD but thought I would post some pics here as well, its very tight fit to have enough clearance for the shaft joint. Had to grind 5 ml out of the mounting bracket to get clearance ..

FYI for you and other folks who use a Dart block. Dart uses a straight (non-tapered) tap to create all plug locations in the block. It is the engine builder's job to follow up with a tapered tap and finish tap these locations to the desired depth. The plugs will be recessed in their location if done properly.

Obviously, you do this before washing the block for final assembly.

Trial engine fit, obviously the moroso sump needing a trim, also STILL dont have engine mounts ( sorry but FFR are hopeless with my missing parts list) what I have learned is that its common for engine to sit offset 30ml which I find hard to believe but bring on the comments :-)

You need to swap that oil pan for a rear sump pan, no clearance issues then, and better oil control.

Looking good.
Everyone comments on the offset engine but it lines up with the pinion of the rear differential since that isn't centered.

also engine offset helps with center of gravity when racing
didn't realize yours is right hand drive engine offset will hurt center of gravity

Dont worry there wont be any racing going on in this Daytona, its more cruise and show than go.

I'm building a coupe in South Australia and saw your thread. There are two being build here now. How will your engine go with emissions? I'm looking for a 69-70 351 Windsor block which my engine builder will use if I can find one. No more Ford dart blocks as they've stopped them or gone under I'm told. Anyway I'll keep an eye on your build. Also waiting on parts and will sort seats soon I hope.
