View Full Version : Slots in rear lower control arm mount?

Hey guys,
I'm helping a local guy who bought a GTM completed a little while back and ran into the below situation when he dropped it off at a shop for some upgrades. Have you guys ever ran into the need or seen slots cut in the rear most rear lower control arm mounting point to the frame? Was this done to help alignment? Looks sketchy as hell to me.

I've never built a GTM but that looks incredibly dangerous. Seems to me the panel should have an access hole or the bolt direction reversed, but they cut slots instead? I'm sure some guys who know will chime in, but I wouldn't drive it another foot until someone who knows says that's normal.

Right? Myself, my buddy, and the shop are all scratching our heads on this one. Especially my buddy knowing he was on the track doing 130+ mph in this thing. Looks dangerous as hell to me.

Thats not how those are supposed to look for sure, typically the adjustment only happens on one control arm bushing and the other side (the side pictured here) is fixed. I wouldn't be comfortable driving it around with those slotted like that.
This is one of the risks of buying a used or partially built vehicle. It's a good example of why we need universal background checks before people are allowed to buy tools. This is a hazard -- fix it!

OMG, terrifying. 130mph and then cornering..

Guessing somebody really really needed to get the control arm on/off without removing panels to properly remove the bolt. Weld some caps on the ends and/or make some new mounts. They are 3/16 mild steel.

We are definitely getting my buddy set up with repairing this.
Just blows my damn mind someone would do this for whatever reason. You could have easily killed my buddy or myself. I’ve gone for a ride up to about 110mph in this car, scary as all hell for sure!!!

In all fairness, I have read where people say they "needed to slot the mounting tabs" to get the alignment that they needed, but I think this was referring to opening up the ID of the holes slightly in order to get the adjustments right. What is pictured there is DEFINITELY not a safe modification. Possibly a lost in translation type of deal?
Given the fact that we have had to gusset and strengthen the rear suspension mounts considerably, I would highly recommend fixing this the right way, which would be to completely replace any mount that has had this modification.
I saw Jim Schenck chimed in here and I would be willing to bet that FFR would be happy to send you a new set of mounting tabs for fixing this obviously dangerous situation that some builder created.
Fix it. Fix it right. Be thankful no one had any type of incident. Then go over the entire car VERY closely.

Insane.
Suicidal mod.
What crash said with explicit details: Confirm all steering items from steering wheel nuts through every joint and don't forget inner tie rod joints inside the boots at the end of the rack.
Check EVERYTHING on the brakes starting with how the pedal is installed, then work all the way to the caliper brackets.
Obviously, check all parts of the suspension.
Anything you need to keep the car controllable. (good idea to check engine and transmounts to they don't fall out during operation)
Drive less than 5mph until completely done.

MHO: SHEZZZ! there isn't any reason, what so ever, that anyone could come up with, justifying this method of work, so I vote with the others, fix it as soon as possible, if not sooner.
