Hello All!
I'm new to the forums, but I've been wanting to get into the Factory Five Community for the last 11 years. I think that chance may actually happen in the next year or two! Hopefully sooner, but we all know how that goes.
I've looked through the posts, especially the recent one about the pros/cons of a doner car. I would like to build either a Roadster or Coupe, not sure yet. Depends on what part of the country I move back to. I know the temptation to customize/personalize each car is tremendous, especialy after reading the posts. You guys (and gals) have awesome ideas. However, I'd really like to keep it close to factory. As much as you can say that Factory Five is anywhere close to "factory". The complete kit seems to be one of the greatest deals, as far as what is included. More new parts means less future problems.
Ok, so I'm long winded. Even with a complete kit, you will need a motor, trans, rear end, wheels and tires, and a few other things. I truely believe I'd be happy with a 302 motor or the 4.6L equivelant. At least for the start, and then maybe upgrade internals at a later date. I'm going to be very limited on cost.
What do you look for in a donor? How does an impact effect the motor. Obviously, a hit to the rear quarter that hits the wheels could effect the axle. But what about a front end hit. Radiator pushed back to fan, but the engine still runs. Is that ok, what are the possibilities of damage to the engine. Is there a good place to look for engine/trans packages online? mpsautosalvage has some nice packages on Ebay, motor/trans/axle/wiring/fuel system/computer. Does anyone have any input on that? I'm not a Ford or Mustang guy, so what should I look for? Mach 1, Roush, Cobra? Are the engines that much different? And what about transmissions?
This will be a normal driver for me. Something for nice days, driven more often than not if possible. I'd like a nice, reliable, and fast car. It doesn't have to be the fastest FFR out there. It will be far and above the greatest car I've driven yet. I'd just like your input on what to look for.
Sorry for the long post, but thanks for any input!
Matt
