Hi,
I still have to install my coyote engine, but I'd like to know if I can kick off the registration process already.
Does someone know if this is even possible these days?

In my opinion it's not necessary or beneficial to start the process until you are at least very close to the point of being able to take your car for the necessary inspections (CHP, BAR and Brake and Lamp). It's highly unlikely that they'll run out of sequence numbers and you'll either be issued a couple of one day operating permits or one for a specific time period (30 days, 60 days...). If it's the later the time will likely expire before you're able to complete your car and get appointments for the inspections. For me it took 2 weeks to get a call back from CHP just to schedule the inspection. For BAR, it was 3 weeks out to get a "virtual" phone appointment, then about 3 weeks after that for approval to schedule the in-person appointment. You can get additional operating permits by calling the DMV "special processing unit" and requesting one (I had to). Also, for what it's worth, even if the DMV does not say the Brake and Lamp is required at the first appointment don't be surprised if they do when you go back, that's where I'm at right now. Good luck!
