It's funny, when Jay spoke about Factory 5 it was a mix of disgust and admiration. His tone about replica's was all over the map. He seemed annoyed most of them are not really stock original and at the same time talked about how beautiful they were.

I dont think he seemed annoyed at replicas at all. He seemed to enjoy that one is all original, but was willing to say some of the replicas are even better. I assume he doesnt mean looks so much as that the chassis of some of the replicas make them even better than the original which isnt really surprising since chassis and suspension design is quite a lot improved from what it was like in the 60s.

I didn't get the impression he didn't like replicas, and in fact he seemed to think there were a lot of great replica options out there, including Factory Five. He seemed to be so casual sitting in traffic in someone else's $2.5M car, although he did comment on that a couple of times. Great video and I also was drooling over the sound that car was making, both at idle and under acceleration, although it sounded a bit like it started to stumble near the end of the video.

Incredible, I don't think it gets any better than that and the sound of that big block.

Jay owns a replica Cobra.

At a local show in Burbank Jay showed up and was looking at a replica. Another guy asked the owner if it was real, and then turned his nose up when the owner said "no". Jay asked the rude guy "What kind of Cobra do YOU have?". So I would say that he is fine with replicas.

I think he was keying on the fact that replicas run the gamut of total junk to "better than the originals".

GREAT video!

I'd say he did a great job in describing our cars and I think by mentioning Factory Five in particular it becomes a big win for our hobby.

:)

I can't agree more. He mentioned FFR in a positive way and any publicity is good publicity.

Yeah I think that's right.

Before I bought my kit I was skeptical about the quality of "kit cars" and was in the kit cars are junk group. I saw a show with Jay Leno (not sure if it was Jay Leno's Garage) where he featured his cobra replica. He talked about the engine swap he did and how great the performance was. He said something but I don't have the direct quote that, he has cars that go fast in a straight line and cars that can corner well, when I want to do both this is the car I drive. He commented on how well the car performed and how much fun it was to drive. I thought, if a kit is good enough for Jay, a guy that can certainly own a real one, then it will be good enough for me. He was right.

The term "kit car" still makes me cringe. I use the term replica. It makes me feel better if nothing else. :)

The term "kit car" still makes me cringe. I use the term replica. It makes me feel better if nothing else. :)"Kit Cars" got a bad rep back when they were crappy fiberglass bodies over a VW chassis.

My first Cobra was a Classic Roadster, bought it cheap, and it was really just cobbled together to *look* like a Cobra but, ran like crazy, but, really, a "kit car."

My second was a SPF, and nothing "kit" about that at all. It was a quality ride, hard to beat, but now crazy spendy. I can't believe we could sell a SPF with a side-oiler back in The day for under $55k...and make money.

The current crop of most Cobras would be referred to as "Owner-Built Replicas", not "kit cars."

Amen Brother, Amen!

Redbone is my first and likely my last build because of time and budget constraints; it definitely isn't a kit car!

I used the phrase "kit car" in my reply because that was my thinking at the time. I no longer have that feeling about these cars. To me, these are as real as you can get. However, if someone asks if it is real or a kit, I answer kit. To me, it is the thing that distinguishes mine from the other cobras and many of the other cars at a car show or meet. I get a chuckle when I ask about another car's specs to find out that the person knows nothing about their car. I am proud to say I built this car and have touched almost every nut and bolt. That is one of the aspects I admire about Jay Leno. Even though he has a team of mechanics and an abundance of cash, he is very "hands on" and knows the details of every car he owns.

I saw the show years ago on Jay's cobra replica. It is a one off custom built car, he's had it for decades. I remember it had a cammer motor in it.
