I have a MK1 with a 351 Winzer (sp) engine. This engine came out of a 2002 truck, I believe. Well the starter went south on me the other day.I took it to an Advanced Auto, and they gave me what they thought was the right one for the motor. I installed the starter, and when I turned the key, all I get is a Whuring sound. Apparently the gear is not engaging the flywheel. They checked the starter, and the gear flies out properly, so I assume it's not the right one for the motor. Has anybody replaced the starter in this engine and what the part no. might be and where you got it? Thanks in advance for any replies I need help!

Are you sure the engine was 2002? Not 1992? 2002 trucks got modular gas engines. Windsor*

I hope you have your old starter. The nose length needs to be the same as the original.
That is the distance from the seat flange to the protrusion for starter gear travel.
If you do not have your old starter and your replacement is the wrong one. Get one with the different length nose. It sounds like you have the short nose one now.
Hope this helps get you going.

Best thing to do is verify the engine using the casting number and then use the Year, Make, Model filters on the store website and start from there.

When being sure you have the right starter, we need to bring up the solenoid thing – whether the MK1 has an external solenoid, etc.

When I first build my car I had an external solenoid, plus a starter for a 90’GT that had an internal solenoid – they were fighting each other.

Hi, Not surprised they guessed and gave you the wrong one.

I installed this one from DB Electrical in 2012 when I swapped out the 5.0 engine and installed a stroked 427 Windsor into my Mark 3 roadster. It has worked great for me since 2012! The part number is SFD0001. You can't beat it for the price!!
