Finally ordered my Type 65 Coupe last week

Hey guys

Finally ordered my type 65 coupe last week. Expected ship date of January 21st. I have been trying to do this for many years but finally got the kids out of the house and have the time and space to do this....I have had an item on my bucket list since I was a teenager to build a car from the ground up. It is now some 35 years later and i just realized I probably only have about 12-15 good years left so I cannot wait any longer.

I will start a build thread when it gets closer but my plan is to build a coupe for the street (no plans for any track time). I want to do a calm 427 because when I think of Shelby cars, I think of a 427. Also order the IRS rear end. I am an engineer by trade but have very little automotive mechanic experience. I plan on taking my time and reading and watching videos and talking to you guys a lot to make sure I get it right the first time.

I live in North Alabama and plan on getting to know Logan and Erik K. who live close by if they let me.

Very excited and cannot wait to get started.

Congratulations on your Coupe order! Love ours after finishing this year and now 1,800+ miles. An awesome car that gets a ton of attention everywhere it goes. And welcome to the forum. Lots of great help and information here.

Regarding your 427 choice and comments. I'm assuming (hoping) you mean a small block 427 (e.g. from a 351 block) because I don't believe an actual big block will fit. Even then, you're going to really need to watch your height with the 351 block. What intake and induction choices you make (carb, EFI, air cleaner, whatever) may/may not fit under the somewhat low profile Coupe hood. Lower than the Roadster where the same issues also have to be closely watched. For the record, I assume you know the original six Coupes were all 289's. There was one 427 started but never finished. Also assume you know a whole bunch of Roadsters (Cobras...) were 289's. I get the Shelby = 427 connection. But a strong case could made for 289 = Shelby as well. I'll spare my Coyote pitch, which I agree is not very authentic but it's fantastic in ours.

Yes, the 427 will be from a 351 Windsor....David at Factory Five and I discussed that my choice of intake and air cleaner would be very important unless I had plans to mod the hood

edwardb, I misspoke when i mentioned Shelby's and 427. I knew the originals had 289s but I liked the 427 Cobras

Another welcome to the "Coupe" and as Paul noted it is an awesome car. Mine is also red but I have Dart 363 in mine, used the small deck block to help with the limited hood height. People see the Cobras around but the Coupe is different so it gets lots of attention.

Great to have another builder in the region. You have some time before your January delivery date to get familiar with the build manual, read the forums, collect parts, and prepare your garage. The 351 Windsor block based 427 will be a stout engine. And good call on the IRS, you wont regret it.

I’d be happy to have you stop by sometime to check out my Coupe-R and talk shop. I’m in the New Hope area, about 30 minutes southeast of Huntsville. I’m sure Erik T. would be happy to offer some insight or show you his build as well. He has an absolute beast of a Coupe!

Welcome! Exciting journey you’re about to begin. The coyote make more efficient power but there is something to a 427. Not just the number which is historic but the sound it makes. I suggest reading this thread (https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?30642-Will-it-fit-351-Performer-RPM-Intake). I was able to stuff my 427 in without hood modifications but I’m not going the lie you’re going to have to choke it off a bit. Lower intake, thinner air filter. I bet it’s going to cost a 10% loss in power, that’s about what I experienced.

Lots of successes and failures as you can read about in my build thread. But since I’ve tried the hood on and shoved a camera in there I am feeling confident it can be done.

Welcome Aboard But More Importantly, Welcome To The Family!

If you are going with a 351 Windsor based 427 Stroker, then you may want to consider running the Edelbrock Torker II Intake.
The Torker II has a very low carb height, similar to the Standard Edelbrock Performer, but will breathe very well in spite of the lack of height because of the single-plane design.

While many people frown on running a single-plane intake, these cars don't need a lot of bottom-end torque and a 427 stroker will have plenty of power to spare.
My pal Jerry has one on his Gen-1 Daytona and the Torker II fits just fine especially since he's running a K&N Drop Base Air Cleaner.
His engine is a 392 stroker and he has more than enough bottom-end torque to shred the tires in the first three gears.

From personal experience, I also run a single-plane intake (Weiand Team-G) on my 6.3-liter stroker motor (383 SBC) in my Dark Side MK-4.
The car pulls like a freight train from 2,000 all the way up to 6,500 RPM and it runs just fine at 1,700 RPM in 6th gear at 70 MPH once it has warmed up.

Since I am still a couple of months from delivery, thought I would start looking at some options...Looking at Wheels, I am going with 18 inch wheels. I also thinking of ordering the 13 inch IRS Brakes for the Rear. Are the 13 inch good with the 18 inch wheels?

Also, I am going to throttle back on the engine a little, now I am leaning toward a Blueprint 347..Still plenty of HP for what I want to do with my coupe.
