View Full Version : Has anyone tried a Curb Alert or something else to avoid running up on curbs?

Twice now I’ve misjudged how high/close a curb is when I’m parking my MK4. The lip under the nose of my car scrapes the top of a curb and sends shivers up my spine! Fortunately most of the scraping is from the domed screws holding driving lights in the oil cooler opening. It’s still a horrific sound I don’t want to ever hear again. I don’t even want to think about how bad it could get!
Has anyone tried mounting a Curb Alert or other infrared sensor system somewhere out of sight?

Very interesting. My current approach is to park about 1 mile away from the curb and I’m still in gel coat. Let us know if this works.

It's easy to never scrape the nose, BACK into the parking spot.
In our club, anyone pulling into a parking spot, has to wear a dunce hat.

It is such a small car. You only need about 2/3 of the parking space. This may not be what you want to hear, but why pull all the way in? If you can just see the curb from over your hood, you are in far enough.
I've scraped the underside of the oil cooler opening pulling into steep entrances of parkings lots. I try to avoid those situations, but it is also part of driving the car.

You might be able to rob some of the distance sensors and beepers off some of the earlier Ford vehicles.
2 of my drivers have them.

I have installed the factory "Look" rear bumper sensors and they worked out great. This systems seems pretty cool and price seems reasonable.

I agree, no need to ever pull in that far.
Backing in is for pickups........for some bizarre reason. I lived in Virginia Beach for a while. Almost everyone there backs in and a HUGE percentage of cars there have a caved in rear bumper. Enough to notice while driving around.

Sure, pull in and only get pictures of the a$$ end of your car. Or park it correctly and have cool pics. Click to enlarge

I lightly scraped my tire and lip of the rim on a curb when parking. It's the only time in my entire life I've ever done it. Just had to be the Cobra. :(

I have done some on in Vettes, i would recommend something that gives a visual cue over a tiny speaker that you might now hear over the side pipes. They work great when installed correctly. i have done one similar to your link, hard to hide and also paintable bumper ones, they are harder to aim IMO, but give a cleaner look. the only thing i hate about the Visual/Audio cue ones are the ugly interfaces such as below, just looks cheap to me and these are common.

Of course when posing for pictures. I don't tend to take pictures every time I go pick up a pizza or stop at Home Depot. The a$$ end is pretty sweet looking too.
Nice pic.
Parallel parking works too. Not that everyone can handle that though. 136570
