Made some great progress this week on 7015. Got the body back from paint and started re-assembly.

Nice! What is the color / paint code?

Mercedes Iridium Silver Metallic. Paint code 775.

I REALLY liked the MKIV pic on the Factory Five website but they told me that their painter did a custom mix so there was no chance of matching it. Instead my wife and I spent a couple of hours walking around car lots until we found this color on a 2009 S class.

Very nice classic look! Like it without the stripes. If you don't mind, where did you get your side pipe heat deflectors? WEK.

Heat shields came from **********. A little pricey but VERY functional. My only comment would be that I chose the chromed versions and now wish I had gone for the ceramic coated versions as I am seeing spots of rust start to emerge.

Thanks for the heads up, Todd. Let's see it when it's completely done. Good POM candidate. WEK.

Very nice - I like the color alot and it looks very clean without the strips. Are the wheels from Factory Five and it looks like you have the straight axle. I'm thinking of building my next car with IRS - I like the look but I also like the deeper wheel look on your car. Congrats on getting this far, you don't have much to go.

Thanks for the kind words! Yes, the wheels are the standard FFR supplied Halibrand knockoffs (spinners are on the shelf waiting for my elephant ears to come back from powder coating) and yes, I have the 3 link with the straight axle. If I had to do it again I would probably go with the IRS but having said this, I like the adjustability of the 3 link both for centering the body as well as dialing in the traction.

Finished the front lights and bumpers today:

Two comments for those of you who are fitting your trunk. I'm not sure how the new MKIV attaches but on the MK3.1 the standard hinges cause the center of the trunk to rub on the body when you open the trunk fully. My solution to this problem was to cut some plastic (couple of mil thick) in the same shape as the hinge and use it to slightly raise the hinges. I now have perfect clearance with no rubbing. BTW, this same approach works GREAT for making gaskets for the windshield wiper fittings. The standard rubber pieces that come with the kit have to be stretched but the hard plastic pieces I made fit perfectly.

Gary,

Congrats again on your build! Your car looks amazing!!!

You've clearly got more courage than I. A drive across Houston in Friday rush hour would scare the crap out of me ;-)

Your car looks beautiful! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do mine. Last night I rode over to the Audi dealership to check up on my daughter who was buying a car and I emptied out the showroom, sales staff, customers, managers even the receptionist/greeter. You will find nothing but compliments.
By the way I like it without the stripes, mines the same way. Enjoy it!

Todd,

Did you use a delrin or some other variety of plastic for the hinge shims? Because I noted the same fitment issue with mine early in the process. Thanks, WEK.

I must admit that I took a less scientific approach and don't really know what kind of plastic this is. I simply wandered through Home Depot looking for something that would work and settled on a replacement mailbox as my plastic source. Pretty cheap, lots of material to work with and just the right thickness. I had the "aha" moment when I saw it because they are obviously designed to handle extreme weather changes and after driving around the neighborhood I confirmed that most don't seem to fade or show obvious signs of wear. The nice thing was that it is easy to cut on the band saw and the edges can be sanded quite smooth without changing color. I also used this material to build the oval cover for the inside of the trunk.

edit: I should add that masking tape sticks nicely to it making it easy to trace the design I wanted for each piece ;-)

John Evans of Vintage Restorations in the Woodlands. John is a great guy and he does really nice work. I did all the fitting/bodywork and block sanding and then dropped the body/panels off at his shop for final sanding and paint. He has done a lot of FFR cars and knows exactly what he is dealing with.

PM me if you need his contact information as he doesn't advertise.

Todd

edit: I should add that John is VERY flexible. Mine was a straight "sand/paint" job but he is happy to arrange for alignments, engine work, electrical and pretty much anything else you might need. He has another FFR in the shop right now where he is doing all the bodywork, installing the oil cooler, adjusting the carb, doing a tune and pretty much everything else necessary to get the owner on the road.

Beautiful ride! I've really come to like the solid color no-stripe look too. I loved the silver on the Mk 4 too (I hope you know it is now painted red! LOL) and wanted some silver in our build, so went with the silver stripes on the Tungsten gray body. My wife's Explorer Sport Trac is a great silver called Silver Birch, very elegant looking. Silver is such a nice color on almost anything. Looks great, be proud of it and enjoy it!

Jeff,

Would love to hear the story on this one.

Wouldn't you know it, Houston has gone almost 9 months without rainfall and now that my car is ready for the road it is raining. I guess finishing an FFR kit is akin to a raindance.

Ditto on the no stripes. Mine's been on the road less than two months and the most common comment on the appearance is people like the understatement of no stripes.

Great color choice! Looks beautiful.

Have you contacted ********** about warranty for the rusting heat shields? You shouldn't have to put up with that..

Perhaps Dave is using the old Carroll ****** trick, of painting the same car different colors, so it looks like they have more than one example..lol

My historical photos show that many of the original Cobras, in both street (especially) and racing trim, had no stripes. So there is a strong precedent for the clean look your car exemplifies so nicely. Excellent work.

I think I will name her "007" because half a dozen people (so far) have commented that it looks like a James Bond car. I guess the color creates a resemblance to the old DB5

Jeff,

Thank for the kind words and HUGE thanks for the extended passenger footbox and the power brake kit!!! The car stops on a dime with great feel and my wife loves the extra room in the footbox.
