Does anyone know of a better looking shift handle for the TKO trans. The one that comes with the car is a bit wieny looking. Maybe something out there that is billet aluminum with slots cut in it.

I bought a Hurst one (Part # 5389023). Sounds kinda like what you describe. But I have the mid shift on the TKO so slightly different geometry.

I have the 427 one from **********. Nice piece and unless something has changed, only place you can get it. I had mine powder coated black.

X2 on the ********** 427 style shifter. I also found a eBay source for a solid polished stainless steel knob to top it off.

I used this shifter knob on the Factory Five handle and it really dressed the stock piece up.

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/lok-sk-6916

Then I picked up a boot was Scott Drake for a Fox Body Mustang which I then attached via a stainless bezel which was from Lokar.

https://www.cjponyparts.com/scott-drake-manual-shifter-boot-leather-mustang-1987-1993/p/MSB18/

It came out clean, to say the least.

Yes. I have a mid shift kit for the TKO. It moves the shifter forward to that "middle" location. You probably have the normal rear.

Hurst also sells a 10 inch one (5389025) that looks more like what you might need but not sure on the angle (I think the cobra fit requires more angle forward). Clayton Machine also makes one similar (SH-202-10).

Just spent the last two hours looking at all the different styles types and bends and I think the one I like the best is the one on Hacksaws car. I like the industrial look of it. Unless I buy the midshaft tower I will make an adapter to the 10" Hurst handle. It's exactly what I was looking for. I was kind of amazed there is basically nothing for the MKIV other than stock.

2X on the ********** 427 shifter. It also fixes the TKO problem of popping out of third gear if you are using the original look rubber gator. I was having trouble with the combination of the shorter FFR handle and the rubber boot pulling my new TKO out of third gear under light cruise. The T5 did not seem to have that problem. The ********** handle pretty much sticks straight up for the first 3-4 inches so is much less prone to popping out of gear plus to me it's one of the iconic features of these cars along with the center mount reverse speedo on the SC cars, etc. My 2 cents for what it is worth. Didn't know about the popping out of third gear, I see why that would happen when the shifter is on an angle so low putting back strain from the boot. By the way everyone who posted pics here of their cars they are beautiful. I never get tired of looking at these cars and how people put their own touches to personalize them. To me there is no super car on this planet that looks better than a Cobra.

Look at these shift knobs: http://www.sweetknobs.com/

I have the stainless steel version. It weighs ~2.5 pounds! You can get any thread pattern you like to match up with your shifter handle.

Yes, they have some really trick stuff. You can even get a line lock or a nitro switch installed within the shifter ball housing.

Also check out Ring Brothers shifters. They make an adjustable one that looks like the Hurst. VMS Racing makes one too. I think there are a couple others.

For the midshift kit there are a few options.
The most common is the Pro 5.0.
I have one from Silver Sport Transmissions.
American Powertrain makes one called "white lightning".

I just ordered one of these from Ringbrothers.com. It's very much like the Hurst Shifter that Hacksaw84 mentions, but all black without the silver/natural metal highlights. I'll try to remember to get a pic up once it arrives. 136360

Most of the rubber boots I tried were so stiff they wanted to pull it out of the forward gears, or the ones that would work were way too big.

So I noticed a lot of you use **********’s 427 shifter. I installed it and rode a car for a bit, and found it somewhat uncomfortable due to it being less forward leaning:
- downshifting to second or 4th gear makes me to twist my hand in a strange and unusual way
- when a car is in the 2nd gear, a knob is essentially almost in my armpit.

Is it just me?

Think its you or your seating position. Have had no issues with the shift over 15,000 miles.

The boot I ended up with is a Scott Drake part #C922-7277-L from Summit. $32.95. I also made a plate to go on the trans shifter stub that positions the stick another 1.5" forward and angled it down about 8 degrees more forward.

Something does not look right with those pics. 1st seems too low down and if that is second, wow that is far back. I recall there was a plate position on the TKO that would move the shifter further back from the dash especially when one was in 1st but yours seems to already be set that way. Not sure what is going on.

Can't do a current picture with the red knob as clutch is being replaced. Maybe an angle thing with the picture but this is pretty much straight across. Have a few inches in first to the console.

What size bolts are you using that allows for that much movement?

Best advice if that is the ********** shifter is drill out the holes and use the correct hardware. 3/8” if I remember correctly.

Initially I decided to skip drilling and try to solve it by tightening smaller bolts. Didn’t work, so I drilled out the holes to 3/8 and bought longer bolts with correct thread

Thanks for the link. I've had no luck in finding a shift knob like you have. I didn't search the ********** site when I ordered my 427 shifter as I assumed incorrectly that the FFR supplied knob would fit. I've ordered several times over the past 4 or 5 months from ********** and while it took an excessive amount of time to receive, the orders did show up. I just don't order anything from FL if I'm in a hurry. Thanks again!
