View Full Version : re-gluing vinyl

I only received my body/interior parts in July, but when I opened the box for interior parts again at the weekend I found that the elbow rest and door panels had come un-glued.

Since there was no staples or anything, I assume this glue should be really good glue? I asked FFR and was told to try "3M Super 77" and if it didn't work, they would send new parts.
Since I've never used any glue like this (it boggles my mind that glue on its own would be right for this task), does anyone have tips and tricks to do this? Like, how do I pull all this vinyl tight simultaneously? I have a "webbing puller" but it only grabs 2" at once. Are there wider versions that I can pull 12" at once - and is that the right tool? Any links would be appreciated.
I would be tempted to pop rivet another piece of aluminum over the stuck material, but that of course would add a lot of bulk.

Finish peeling the material to the corners to avoid wrinkles.
Steam or heat from gun or hair dryer will make the vinyl soft and manageable and the 77 glue will do the trick
Works for me

Happened to me as well on that and the side door panel covers, tried to do the Super 77 but it never worked, the arm rest I reworked with wood and the door panels will be reworked this winter somehow, not sure yet.

What the hell? Ok so buying more glue doesn’t seem like a very worthwhile option. It’ll just happen again?

In my opinion you do not want super 77. You want 3m super trim adhesive. Sprayed on both pieces and let it sit a good minute before you try and bond them. Once they are bonded, you need to clamp the pieces and come back tomorrow.

That is exactly what I used to rebuild (made it smaller) mine. 135767135768135769135770135771

FFR is using the wrong adhesive IMHO. Anyone looking for a permanent solution, pick up some Weldwood Contact Adhesive. I used this on all my vinyl top, head liner, and interior vinyl/leather installs, I have never had an issue with it letting go. It can be brushed on or sprayed on. Strong stuff.

I agree. On my GTM I used the 3M Super Trim adhesive in the areas that I could spray and the Weldwood where I could brush it on. The Weldwood is quite strong.

3m weather strip adhesive 08008
Yellow snot in a tube. We called it guerrilla snot. Works good for gluing stuff.

Thanks, I just happen to have a can of Weldwood that I bought when I built my console.

Just to chime in here. I'm glad I saw this thread. I used the 3M Super 77 on my tranny tunnel and even though I did a good job of cleaning the aluminum and using very high quality vinyl, it came unglued. I'll be giving the Weldwood a try.....thanks.

10 years ago I learned the hard way. I installed a vinyl top on my 70 challenger which if you have never done a vinyl top, it's challenging to do it straight & without wrinkles and it turned out great. I used a 3M spray on adhesive suggested to me at the time and it looked great. A year later I took the challenger to a car show and someone asked why my vinyl top was bubbling an I thought the guys was crazy but sure enough the glue was letting loose and causing the top to bubble.
Took it to a reputable custom interior / top shop to see if it could be salvaged and they asked what I used and I told them and he noted there is your problem, those spray can adhesives break down with heat. He pointed me to the Weldwood as to what they use for all their vinyl tops and any interior and it's all I've been using since. I redid the challenger top using it and it still looks like the day I did it years ago. Also have done 4 or 5 interiors now with Weldwood and they are still holding fine too.
Good stuff....expensive, but well worth the money. I like the fact for larger jobs it can be sprayed on, or for smaller jobs it can just we brushed on. My only advice is after you coat both piece and its skimmed over, make sure the piece is where you want it to be because once you press on it and the two surfaces meet, it is staying there. For larger jobs I like to put wax paper between the surfaces so I can move it around before pressing it down and then I slowly remove the wax paper and press as I go.

LOL.
Ok, I guess I need to bite the bullet and spend $50 on a tin.
I wonder if their other contact cements would work as well - come in smaller tins, e.g. this one (https://www.amazon.com/Weldwood-Contact-Cement-3-fl-oz/dp/B01IHYGKRW/ref=sr_1_14?dchild=1&keywords=Dap+Weldwood+Contact+Adhesive+-+Landau+Top+and+Trim&qid=1602601542&sr=8-14)

Unfortunately I have no experience with any of their other products. I do know my neighbor installed some type of rubber floor tile in his garage and used another one of Weldwood's product and said it worked well too.

I used Super90, recommended by FFR as better that 77. Almost all my bonded vinyl and some carpet came unglued once the Alabama temperatures hit above 90. Used 3m weather strip adhesive 08008 to spot reattach but will try
Weldwood to redo. I bonded vinyl behind the seats rather than carpet and it is all flapping in the breeze as well as part of the panel.. Very disappointing to have to reglue
