View Full Version : Viking Blue paint color code question

I'm leaning heavily towards Viking Blue color for my FFR roadster, with no stripes. Something close to this:
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=135166&d=1600349152

(my exhaust pipes are SS, roll bars are black, but I'll figure something out one way or another)

Internet research for a proper paint code only adds more confusion. So a question to paint guys Kleiner and Miller — if you paint a roadster in Viking Blue, what paint/code/whatever magic do you use?

Love it. This is exactly my color of choice as well. Thanks for the guidance Jeff.

Jeff, is that picture representative of how a Viking blue car looks in real life? I've been searching the internet for pics, and find pictures of Viking blue cars with very different hues..

Oystein, Viking Blue can look very different depending on lighting. Some pictures of mine look more gray, some more blue, some even have a touch of green.

alexmak,

I use this same photo as the inspiration for what I'd like my car to look like someday. I've had similar trouble finding any consistency in the internet photos of cars painted in Viking Blue.

Seems to be too dark. Viking blue is almost silver without proper light

Most likely the picture has some saturation increased, with some extra contrast and shadow. I realize that the Viking color is lighter but code provided by Jeff seems to check out, and I will also ask a painter to mix some before they paint the car to make sure it’s the one

Alex, I used the same pic as inspiration for my roadster and I found out that is not truly Viking Blue. Can’t recall where I found this out but supposedly that one is a custom mixed blue so da Bat is right of course. Regardless Viking is a gorgeous colour.

Below was my roadster painted Viking Blue with Wimbledon White stripes.

Thank you, Kyle! The second picture is the color I expect to get as a result. Who painted your car? What code was used for it?

Alex, Ron Randall of Metal Morpheous painted mine and he is based in North New Haven, CT. I am not sure which specific code he used but he did tell me that there is only one shade of Viking Blue unlike some other blues so any of the ones Jeff listed will be the same. I think it just depends on the painter and which manufacturer they prefer to use.

Also keep in mind that the two pictures I posted purposely so you can see the difference depending on the light. Again a gorgeous blue IMHO and definitely one I would do again. I actually have a sample metal piece sprayed by Ron if you want it. I just need to find it and could mail it to you.

Yes, I completely understand the light and that it changes the perception, and I realize it was two photos of the same car. I’d be happy to pay for shipment of the sample if you can find it! Than you!

Not to start a color opinion piece, but take a look at Ford Color Portofino Blue

Portofino is really nice as well and that was the other blue I was considering. I understand there are different shades though but am no expert on paint.

I did this one a few weeks ago in Ford's Brittany Blue from the mid 1960s which is a light blue very similar to Viking.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=135339&d=1600691744

Brittany Blue code "Q"
Ford Alphanumeric M1624
PPG 12843

I agree with my buddy Bat; the photo originally posted is closer to Guardsman than Viking.

Confused yet? :p

Thanks, Jeff, this is also beautiful! After googling a lot of codes and descriptions it's very hard to confuse me with a couple of pictures! :)

yes, it's gorgeous, but I already convinced my wife that Viking Blue is the same as Princess Blue, so she's fine with it

Princess Blue was what I originally wanted, but couldn't get a color code. All that was available off the AC color wheel was the British supplier code. I went with Viking because it was a standard Ford color and was close enough. Rumor has it that the 1964 Shelby team cars were painted Viking Blue.

I think Princess blue was renamed Viking blue, because Viking blue sounded better

That was the story I had heard years ago, when I was seriously thinking of painting my roadster Princess Blue. It would've sounded a bit to dainty a name for a Texan..:)
In discussion with others on FFCars, I was sent this picture, claiming it showed the difference between a true Princess Blue, (on left) painted by AC Cars, vs the Viking Blue, which I believe was also the color of the Cobra Team cars.
136452

Other pictures of originals in Princess blue, appear to be much lighter blue than Viking blue, so who knows where the story of the name change came from.

I really like them all, as well as the Brittany Blue which looks great on our cars.

In the end, I painted my car green..:p

Beautiful car!
The lighting variables in pictures can really cause confusion with colors. The blues, and silvers seem to be the worst for that. For instance, I would look at that setting sun picture, and swear it was Portofino blue. I imagine the pictures taken with film camera's had the added variable, of the type of film used, lens filers used, the speed and aperture settings, etc, to further complicate things, tint wise.
I'm sure many builders chose a paint color from a Cobra they have seen in a photo, only to be surprised when they see the finished product in the light of day.
