289 Exhaust Heat Shields?

I'm planning my 289 build and have a couple of questions for which I haven't been able to find answers in the forum. It might just be my ineptitude in doing searches, so if there are any entries on this already, please point me in the right direction.

Are "snake bites" an issue with the 289 exhausts?
Has anyone added heat shields to their 289 exhausts?

No issues on my part, but one of my neighbors got a small one. He's in his 80s, and tried to get out before I could get over to the passenger side to help him out.
