View Full Version : Charcoal canister vent/purge

When I was building the fuel system I installed the charcoal canister without really understanding it's purpose, other than filtering gas tank vapors, and the build manual doesn't expand on it. So now that I have gas in my tank, the garage stinks. I do have a vent line from the tank to the canister but the other ports are open. I've done some research and it looks like I need to add a purge solenoid and run a line to the throttle body. What have others done about this?

Thanks,
Frank

I capped off all but the smallest one on my build. Used a Foxbody version of the canister.

Seems to work around the 90-95% level...a small amount of fuel smell only on really hot days.

You can sort of see it in this photo. It’s the rectangular device with the red caps on top. I’m not using a solenoid. You would need to be using a factory ECU or program an output on an aftermarket ECU as the solenoid seems to be open only for a short time during engine run as best I understand.

Sure!
I ordered from CJ Pony Parts...their Part Number: FTCC1

Now this doesn’t come with a mounting bracket. You could hit the wreckers for one and clean it up or bend two strips of 1” wide by 1/8” aluminum like I did. Also doesn’t include the two red caps, those are regular pipe fitting plastic caps from a fuel pump or similar I’d received, held on with Gorilla Glue. The 90 degree inlet fitting is also custom, I just used a nylon windshield washer fluid 90 deg and glued it in.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,
Pat

I've built my carbon canisters using PVC pipe and activated charcoal for a fish tank. Have one in my truck and Cobra, never any fumes in the garage. Run a fuel hose from tank vent to the canister which gets mounted in rear of car.
Can't find my pictures, but this is similar to what I did: https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?8264-Charcoal-Canister&p=81004&viewfull=1#post81004

I used scotchbrite to hold the charcoal in place.

Here’s another solution that costs less then 4 bucks. 4inch pop up sprinkler, remove guts put steel wool in ends with fish tank charcoal in the middle 3/8 barbed fitting in the threaded end.
