So I now have a Wisconsin Title and Hobbist plates! Other than the 7 week wait it was a relatively painless process. Not sure if normal or Covid related but no inspection required. Now trying to get insurance. Cars are through The Hartford, motorcycles are through Progressive. Both sent me to Hagerty. Since the car has 500hp, Hagerty requires a high performance driving resume. Other than 40 years of driving in Wisconsin winters, a Jeep SRT daily driver, and a Triumph Rocket3 with the same power to weight ratio as the roadster I have nothing else to add. Been waiting 3 days now to hear from them. Called 2 other agencies and it turns out they both just submit paperwork to Hagerty.

So my question is does anyone have insurance on a 500hp car from anyone other than Hagerty? Thanks

I had a Grundy policy done in hours, no drama whatsoever and had to provide nothing but a VIN and a few pics. 60K agreed value for $381/yr with multi-car discount.

Call Midwest Classic Ins ask for Robbin. My roadster is 500+ hp and no issue. They know these cars and make it painless.

Interesting, I just got mine insured through USAA which set me up with Progressive. I've been with USAA for some 50 years so maybe that made a difference. And I don't remember talking about HP. Mine is about 350 HP.

This also fits under my USAA umbrella policy.

The one thing that bothered me though was car value. While I stated an estimated value they said it comes down to their evaluation when a claim is made. I'm going to further evaluate my situation but wanted to get it insured during my go-karting.

PS-until I started the car recently it was not a car but fit within my USAA homeowners policy. That was for the past 10 years. ;)
USAA does not do 'Kit' cars at all.

Same as ILPBfoot. Robbin is also a forum vendor. I think he's really good. He gets my recommendation.

I built a race car that is street legal, looks like a race car, even has my competition number plastered on it and have Hagerty agreed value insurance. How do they know how much HP, Hagerty never asked how much horsepower my car has (it's just a small SBC first introduced in 1955 with about 130HP, honest). Must be something new??? Something about your state market maybe?? The year of the car? Whatever it is, that really sucks.

Maybe explain to them that you'll use the horsepower modulating pedal you specifically installed in the driver's compartment to limit it to 499HP while on the street. How do Vette owners get insurance in your state? That just doesn't sound right.

I highly recommend american national. I had initially used Midwest Classic and Robbin was great but my American Modern policy had too much language around "pleasure driving" that made me nervous. Another forum member pointed me in the direction of American National's collector car policy. Much better IMO.

I received a letter today that Midwest Classics is canceling my policy when it expires in December. They have made arrangements with Hagerty to make me an offer for insurance. I will talk to them plus shop around. For some reason they can no longer do business in Pennsylvania. I don't know if they are excluded from other states as well.

I got a "sort of" cancellation thing in the mail from Hagerty/Midwest Classics also: something to the extent of "Last year Hagerty entered an agreement with Midwest Classics. Hagerty is no longer insuring your type of vehicle in California, however, due to a recent law we are obliged to offer you continuing insurance with Hagerty."

I didn't understand it fully, but the Hagerty Price was less expensive than Midwest Classics. I went with Hagerty, I am assuming Midwest at least gets a commission on the transaction. I got the paperwork from Hagerty and it still says "Broker: Midwest Classics" with Robbin's contact name.

Hagerty had a lot of wording about encouraging you to drive your car and it's unlimited mileage, but not every day and never to work.

It said I am not covered for racing, "burnout contests" at car shows or even "driving up to grid" at the race track.

It's not a secret: It's insured for $50K and the policy was $400.
