It's been a while since i have posted anything so I thought I'd share some progress on the 33. I hope everyone has been staying safe and healthy and getting a lot done on their cars. I'm pretty much in the final stages, need to clean up some wiring, mount tranny tunnel and button up cockpit, then mount body for final mockup time and do body work, then off to paint. My original idea was to do a nice 2 tone paint job with some ghost flames but this can get expensive and I really want to do something different So.... I thought I would do a Woody! or at least a modern take on a woody. My skillset is really more of wood working so my plan is to make removable body panels with a strip wood approach, kind of like how you would build a strip built kayak. The panels would have s.s. button head screws around perimeter attached to rivnuts on fiberglass and I can do the flames as a 3D inlay which would be cool. I'm thinking of using cedar since it is good in the weather, cheep and I can get 2 different colors down here to get the contrast needed. I will cover with a good helmsman varnish which I've done before for gates and pool shower enclosure and still looks great after 5 years. Here are some preliminary sketches i did using a combination of sketchup, photoshop and CAD. Sketchup is a great tool for anyone who doesn't have CAD and is very easy to use and free to download by google. The other idea is also to pay homage to the boat tail roadster. The boat tail i have drawn isn't exactly what i want, it will be more rounded and curved but that is hard to draw, lol. I would finish it by taking the boat deck concept on the rear to the front hood with a wood scoop and do some reverse flames in the wood, almost like the wood is peeling back. I know it sounds ambitious but I think I can pull this off. My plan is to make a mockup of one panel just to see how it goes and learn what works and what doesn't. The good news is I can do this after the car is registered and I'm driving it, so no rush. Plus I only have to paint the car black which I might try to do myself or have a local guy do it.

Some cool ideas there and original! Definitely sounds ambitious, good thing you like working with wood. Agreed that the trunk concept needs work. Personally much prefer the trunk concept in the first pic. Keep us updated as you progress! BTW, what serial number is your kit?

I keep dreaming about grafting one of these: http://www.herculesmotorcarcompany.com/1937-woodie.html onto a FFR chassis. They also have '32 and '34 woodies available. Keith HR #894

I think your concept looks amazing. It has a really fine furniture look. It almost looks like you would be laying it out with veneers, with contrasting veneer inlays. If you have the skills and patience to do it, it will be incredible.
I had the bright idea of making a hard top for my roadster our of wood. I was hoping it would have the appearance of an old bentwood canoe. I cut 1/4" thick strips of SPF lumber, bent them over a heated bending bar to get the curve, then glued and screwed them to a wooden frame. I spent much of the winter working on it, and when I was done, it looked so terrible, I hid it in the basement. I'm embarrassed every time I walk past it. I have done some framing, built a few acoustic and electric guitars, and done some other woodwork. but my wooden roof project was a disaster.

I like #106; however, if I had to try to pull something like that off, I think #64 would be easier.
Piano hinge the doors, suicide style of course, and I bet it would be easier for those of us who are not good with wood.
The big question is, has anybody heard from the V-Man because his concepts were over the top fantastic?

Thanks for the input guys. That is why I want to do more of a modern take by making the panels vs framing a whole upper body, that would be too ambitious. The good news is that door and rear panels don't really have a compound curve to them, they are pretty much a single curve so not difficult to form the plywood backer too and strip with wood. Soon I'll take some time to make a panel and see how it goes but I'm pretty confident the door and hood panels will be pretty straight forward and the trunk has lots of possibilities.

We all know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder so building your personal dream car is what this is all about.
The thing that we all love and hate about the 33 Hot Rod and the Hot Rod Truck is the ability to pursue one's own artistic side.
If you go down that path with a MK-4 Roadster, 289-FIA or Type-65 you are walking on thin ice because those cars are expected to look a certain way.
Go crazy on one of the HR Platforms and you are Tooooooooo Coooooool For Schooooooool!
