View Full Version : V-belt vs Serpentine / PS pump q
I am waffling between the V-belt or Serpentine setup, I like the vintage look of the V-belts but wanted to find out the pro's and con's to each setup. Any info appreciated.
Also, for the FFR power steering rack is there a specific PS pump recommended? Any Fox body pump will do? specific year?
Thanks...

I did one build with V-belts and another with serpentine. Maybe I was just unlucky, but I found more options and less heartburn with the serpentine one. V-belts are more vintage I guess. But fewer options. At least in my experience. Can't help you with an OE PS pump. I've been using KRC and I'm sure they would have one for your setup. Super nice quality but you pay for it.

check out CVF racing. I got my billet v belt pulleys from them and they might have a set up that works for you.
Get the style drive that fits your needs, both work well.
A v-belt system is sometimes more compact if you are simply driving the basics with a single belt (water pump & alternator) so if you are space constrained the v-belt may be an advantage. I like a v-belt system when I'm building one-off drive systems as they are easier to work with when prototyping a new design. And I've also had more resonance vibration issues with serpentine systems than v-belt systems when developing new drive systems. But if an off the shelf drive fits your application, either type drive will work equally well.

You may need a reverse (CCW) water pump with a serpentine.
Thanks for the replies, I ended up going with a Levy serpentine set up.

V belts squeak with a higher output alternator. V belts make more black dust under the hood and require more maintenance. I’m old school but I can’t handle the V belts anymore. Converting to serpentine in my 73 Bronco, 68 Mustang and the future Roadster will definitely have a serpentine set up.

Good move. There is a reason why all modern cars use serpentines. They be better in every way.
