All,

Another annoying punch list items from my coyote first start, my FFR Vintage Tach is not registering …

It lighting up, went through the calibration process without problem. I checked the continuity between the engine and gauge on the signal line. All good.

When I start the car the needle moves slightly then pretty much sits there a zero. Once or twice the needle jumped up/down but that's about it.

Any suggestion ?

bum gauge ?

Thanks !!

Describe how you tapped into the Coyote wiring. Plus are you positive you have it on the right calibration setting? Confirm it's on the .5 pulse per rev setting. At the 500 RPM mark on the tach when powered up with the button down.

I soldered the tach wire to the signal wire at cylinder 7.

I’m confused by you reference to .5 pulse per rev. I set it to pulse 4 per rev because it is an 8 cylinder (per the instructions)?

Is this my problem ?

Yes, that's likely your problem. Study the instructions a little more closely. The directions to use 4 per rev is "Type 1 ignition" with a single coil. The Coyote is a "Type 3 ignition" with coil on plug. Each individual coil will only be triggered every other revolution. Hence the .5 pulse per rev setting. Assuming you have it wired correctly on a signal wire (any of the eight) I'll bet it works when you change it.

dang … I missed that one. I like this solution vs the alternative … Will try to tomorrow.

Much thanks as usual.

As a side note, you’re needle bounce is correct, in fact all the vintage gauges bounce to show they have power on power up except for the voltage and fuel gauges, which go to zero and then indicate their current levels.

I am having similar issues with my tach reading nearly 0 when idling. I have seen instructions somewhere for what appear to be the non-vintage gauges. I have my tach wire hooked up to the negative terminal on the coil and the tach set to 4 pulses/rev. Can someone link me the instructions for setting up the vintage gauges? the only thing I can find is the instructions on installation on the Factory Five Parts catalog.

This is very helpful, thank you. However, my tach is setup correctly, yet it still reads between 0 and 200 revs when idling. Is this normal and I just need to automatically figure in an extra 500 revolutions when I read my tach?

Absolutely not. The tach should read actual without any compensation on your part. If you're absolutely positive the calibration is set for 4 pulses / rev (needle swings to 4,000 when powered up with the button pushed down, the factory default setting) then I'd probably call Speedhut.

But one other thing while I'm thinking about it. Any chance your dial has rotated? There was another situation a while back where the tach wasn't reading correctly. All it took was loosening the bezel and moving the dial. It was working probably. Just pointing to the wrong numbers.

Oh! Great point about the face spinning. Now that you mention it, I believe that might have happened before. Because even off completely, the needle sits way below zero. I think you've solved it, Paul! I'll confirm tonight.
