I'm looking for a diagram for the racing stripes on a MK3. This model has the integrated hood scoop. I found one that show the two stripes being 7-1/2" wide each with a 1" separation between. This would make the overall with of the stripe scheme 16" which would not extend beyond the outer edges of the scoop. I've looked at a number of pics and the stripes appear to be wider than the scoop, but I don't know by how much. I also understand that for the best appearance the stripes need to have a slight taper to them (front to rear), but again how much? The diagram I have I believe the taper is 1/2". Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Paul

For me this is one of those things where you look at specs and diagrams and then fudge them til you like the look. I agree the stripe should be a little wider than the scoop. I also happen to like the stripes to be a little wider than the oil cooler scoop so that may reduce the taper some. Be careful of the taper too. I understand the reasoning but also realize it depends on your viewing distance. For instance say looking at the front the windshield is 5 ft behind the oil cooler scoop. So if you are 20 ft from the car it's 20 ft to the scoop and 25 ft to the windshield. Some taper could help. But say you are 50 ft from the car so it's 50 ft to the scoop and it is 55 ft to the windshield. Now the distances are relatively much closer to each other so less taper would be needed. Look at a lot of pics and lay out some stipes using 2 inch wide tape. Make the tape actually simulate the stripe. If you use the tape as if you were masking to paint it, that appearance will really screw w/ your brain. Don't forget you can also do a 1/4 inch wide pinstripe next to the main stripe. A friend did his car in the common blue w/ white stripe but his wife was ex-Navy so he did a pinstripe in yellow. It looked great and even greater when he told me why.

1/2 in taper does the job.

This diagram should be enough to get you started. As CraigS says, lay the stripes out using painter's tape & then fudge to suit your eye.

In case of conflict, take j.miller's or jeff kleiner's advice as gospel.
