I'm trying to find information on the Guardsman Blue paint color I can give to the power coat guy to match. I'm looking to pc all the sheet metal that will be visible in Guardsman Blue to match the final color we are putting on the car. From previous posts on the forum I've been able to find great information from @JeffKleiner :

Guardsman Blue is Ford #1622-A. The OEM code is F, also D-F. I use all PPG products and their number is 12832. If you go with PPG I really suggest that you use the Deltron line which produces a richer color in this formula.

But the powder coat guy has directed me to https://www.prismaticpowders.com/ to look for the color. Would anyone have any additional information you can share that I can give the powder coat guy?

Also, would this be a 2 step process to get this color?

Thanks!

Powder and paint are entirely different so unless you are doing a solid, non-metallic color you aren't going to find an exact match. Compare an actual paint sample to an actual PC sample and you can probably get close. Don't rely on photos or even color chips in a book.

2x what jeff said. I owned a pc shop for three years, sometimes we could get an exact match but most of the time was just close enough. Usually it is so close you can't tell the difference. I bought powder from many suppliers and even did jobs where the customer supplied the powder, so shop the color around. If they are open to you supplying the powder check this out.

Ok, thanks Jeff. I didn't realize it could be so different. Do you think it is worth trying to match the aluminum panels to the body color or do you think it will look like a swing and a miss and maybe I should just go black? Thank you!

Timmil - thanks. I'll look into providing my own pc and talk to some other power coat shops as well. Our car is going to be driven for fun, may be a trip to the track here and there but we are not trying to win a car show.

My opinion... just going to go ahead and assume you want it... would be to pick a different color that complements the paint job but isn't going for a match. Even if the color is right the finish will probably not look the same. To me it better aesthetically to intentionally be a different color/shade/finish then to try and match two different paint types. I would do black or another color. It also will get dirty and a nice bright color will show.

Yep, correct a complementary color always looks best.

Thanks Michael. Good point on the finish. Didn't think about that. Hmm, now to decide on a complimentary color,.........

Love this forum!

Yeah no problem, always good to bounce ideas off people. I did black, a lot of guys do the same. It will probably be the cheaper PC option too. They run it often so its not a unique mix.

Looks awesome. I was thinking black as well now. No sense in re-inventing the wheel and probably won't see too much of it anyway once everything is installed. Thx!
