I have seen discussion on the noise of the car and the need for ear protection. I am curious how it compares to a bike. I ride a 1200 Harley with open pipes and no helmet. (Florida) how would it compare?

It really depends on your engine set up.
Being a former rider, personally I think it won't bug you.
Ear plug in your left ear and your passenger's right should take care of it.

I now ALWAYS wear protection for what’s left of my hearing.

If you just put put around you'll be fine. If your right foot is heavy, you might need protection. It all depends on your motor and the exhaust. The worst I ever had was in the left lane next to a concrete wall with my first motor. I now have almost twice the power but it's not even as load as that first motor was.

I've posted this a bunch of times. Here it is again: Wear ear protection. Yes, the engine and pipes you use makes a difference. But even if the engine/pipe sound wasn't there, wind, road noise, traffic noise, etc. in an open top car still puts it into hearing damage territory. I've measured it.

Sorry I believe both these to be the wrong answer.:( You can not regain lost hearing. But if you believe otherwise, start saving now for a nice set of $6000 hearing aids.

Rich's car sounds great, but riding in it will make your ears bleed.

Wind buffeting is a bigger problem for me on longer cruises. I've started driving with at least the left ear plug. Ear muffs are better for this, but you can look kinda silly when it's 90*.

I installed the GasN pipes and my wife doesn't complain about the exhaust noise anymore. It's an option to improve (decrease) sidepipe DB's.

Yep, ear buds cranked up to cover the noise from the side pipes on long trips did me in. Doctor asked if I went to a lot of rock concerts, and when I explained it, he said "hope you liked the car!"

I quieted mine down by cutting off the end, shoving in a spiral, and clamping on a new turn down end pointed 45 deg down toward the road. Search the other forum for my thread inexpensive exhaust quiet.

If it's too loud, you're too old.

But then I have extreme hearing loss so I may not have the best advice.

I just received a set of the AirPod Pro ear buds as a B-day gift. I tried them out yesterday for startup in the garage, which is quite loud. I have the Coyote, stainless, long tube headers and Gas-N side pipes. I typically use the orange ear plugs and they work okay, not great. I was not expecting much noise reduction with the AirPods, but boy was I surprised! It totally knocked the noise down. I’m very impressed. These things seem to work as well or better than any ANR over-the-ear headsets I‘ve used in aircraft.

I can’t compare the sound to the noise of Harley, but I’ve been around them and I don’t think they are as loud as side pipes, but the V8 is a much more desirable sound so I would tend to tolerate it more for that reason alone.
