View Full Version : Chicago-area get together, version 2.0
We had a great time going to Wisconsin! Now it's time to start thinking about another road trip!
The consensus from the last trip was that we should do another get together sometime in September. Now is the time to start thinking about that and getting our plans set! I came up with three possible trips; perhaps you will have other equally good, if not better, ideas:
1. Rt. 66. Start maybe in Berwyn and work our way down to Dwight or Pontiac.
2. Lincoln Highway (US. Rt. 30), although I'm not certain where we'd aim for
3. Starved Rock state park. Pick a place to start and have that as our destination.
On to dates: how about September 13 or 20? They are both Sundays. Not that we can't do other days, but we did a Sunday last time...
I look forward to your feedback!

I hope to be back from paint early September so if you do it on the 20th I should be able to join the fun
Any of the suggested routes sound good to me. I am just off Rt 30 so this works best for me

We won't be back from paint until late October but would like to tag along in the SUV.

Was planning on going to Meadowdale Raceway on the 12th http://www.mirpa.org/events.html
In normal years, there have been a couple of hundred cars with about 10 or so cobras of various makes.
The 13th is the British Car Show at Harper College.
So I vote for the following weekend.

I was hoping for a drive north again up to New Glarus for some winding rustic roads and local beer!

Alright guys - I'll give this a second try..... couldn't make it the first go-around due to a late start and then weather.
The roads at Starved Rock are great, but lots of flat and straight getting there.
I've done the Rt. 66 segment from Joliet to Dwight and again from Dwight to Pontiac. Again, lots of straight and flat - but quite a few cool places to stop (if they're open these days).
I've also driven the Lincoln Highway from my town of Geneva out to the Mississippi. With the exception of a few cool towns, it's lots of straight, flat, but incredibly choppy road.
I'm with Sten, though, when it comes to WI.... how about a drive out to south-central area, just on the edge of the driftless region.... say destination Dodgeville and Bob's B17chin' BBQ? Lots of cool roads there and back - including a stop in New Glarus for Spotted Cow and Moon Man.
Another alternative would be a Stagecoach Trail run to Galena out through Apple River Canyon State Park and Scales Mound - awesome roads!!!
Three hours one way is a bit further than I had in mind. My original concept here was for a "Chicago area" get together. The trip to Eagle was truly great; I'd like to keep it closer to home (for me anyway) this time. If there are a bunch of people who'd like to drive to New Glarus, then by all means go there. But, if we can find cars that would like to stay closer to Chicago I'm all in. I'm not heavily invested in any of my original destination ideas, I'd just like to keep it within a closer radius.

Roger that.....
I try to avoid going east of Rt. 59 - just too much traffic. Hopefully you find your route.

count me in gents! Sept 13th or 20th is good.
Destination: I've never been to any of the 3 places but Starved Rock state park looks interesting.
I agree WI roads seem to be more enjoyable. And anything with the words "Stagecoach Trail run..." gets my attention.

Where did we land with this? I just had my inspection this AM (only 3 weeks from paperwork)... got lucky
I'll be good to go in a week or 2.
No decisions yet. So far, I've received a vote for 9/20 and two guys (Sten and Gumball) want to go to Wisconsin. So who knows! There's plenty of good weather left!

Wife and i did about 300 miles in the cobra yesterday. Just wandering and found ourselves around starved rock. The entire park is closed. The bad storms from 2 weeks ago tore it up pretty good. Ottawa, the park and surrounding areas looked bad. Still a great area, but lots of closures right now. Just an fyi...

cross that idea off the list...
You guys ever try the area by House on the Rock - Spring Green, WI? That is a beautiful area to drive through.

Any new info on this cruise? I hate to be the guy but any takers on a Saturday ride instead of Sunday? I'm one of those crazed sports fans and NFL starts this week. Sunday is kinda a "man cave" day for the next few months! :)
I had a nice surprise on Saturday when a green backdraft drove by and was able to flag him down. Been hiding in my community all along. I'm sure he would be in on a cruise as well.
Nothing is set up for this weekend or next, at least so far. I can't even get my car out of the subdivision until they pave. Even after I get the bellhousing trimmed, I can't get over the grinding-related pavement cliff (approx. 2.5 inches!) without scraping side pipes. No clear indication of when that will be. Nevertheless, I am now unavailable on 9-12, 9-19 and 9-20. My next availability will be 9-26 or 9-27.
Perhaps someone else would like to set something up?

That's aweful. I recall the post now that you bring it up again. Can't you just build a plywood ramp to get you thru paving?
Not sure if this is setting something up but I'm available to cruise the coming weekends on Saturday for any takers. I just want to drive so don't really care where!

This weekend i'm open. The following weekend a little iffy. The next couple after that look open. I have an idea. Sten and i are leaving for the Texas meet in a few weeks. If you guys are really up for a drive, come with us on that one. An easy 1250 miles down there. About 500 miles of local cruising and 1250 mile back. Anyone want some extended seat time?

I'm heading up to Road America for a day-trip during the Fall Vintage Fest.... great chance to see old cars run in anger. Dates are 9/18-20, so I'm just going to watch the weather and pick the nicest of the three.

Paddock access, but not track..... unless they are doing lunchtime touring, in which case I'll head out on track for a bit of fun.

I don't plan to join the group for lunch... Will be heading back home to be tortured by my Chicago Bears at noon. The flyer talks about stone creek grill which I think is in Winthrop Harbor, IL
