3/4 wrench is all that's needed to remove the pedal. Remove the nut then wiggle off the pedal. There may also be a small cotter pin if using the stock clutch switch.

I sort of tried that but I guess I didn't wiggle hard enough.

Got it. But the clutch switch was a real "treat".
