I bought a set of Drummer Mike's heat shields. I am very pleased with the looks and the installation seems easy.
Are there any do's and don'ts that others have learned?
Mike advised me to tighten them up after some road time.

thanks,

They do need tightening after a bit of driving. I’ve had my set on for about a month now and really like them. I did manage to still get a burn by stepping too far aft when getting out. Have you developed any deformities from the strap attach points? I have some but they are pretty minor.

Definitely check them after some miles and make sure they're tight. Mine rolled back a little and ended up putting a scratch in the paint when I was driving.

X2 on tighten after a few miles. Check them almost right away after first few miles. Mine also slid around and scratched the gel coat (score 1 for driving in gelcoat).

Pictures please.

I hope to install them tomorrow. Will get some pics, although still in gel coat.

Did the shields slide out from under the clamps or did the clamps and heat strips all move. I might look at addressing it, if I know what might happen. Thanks for the all the advise.

Very pleased with them. Minor dimples (very minor) where the weld points are.

I did not notice any dimples, but they might appear after tightening. I am OK with that, it shows they are holding.

For me, it was the clamp that rotated with the unit. The end of the threaded rod on the clamp then scraped up on the gelcoat as the whole shield and clamp rotated. I probably didn’t clamp enough in the first place. Low stress since I’m in gelcoat but I would have gone nutty if it was after paint. No issue in 1000 miles since I tightened them down.

Hey guys - Having some trouble finding any information on Drummer Mike's Heat Shields. Is there any link?

I burned myself also, they really need to be moved back to the edge of the exhaust opening, but they were designed to mount on the 4" diameter part of the sidepipes, not the 3" diameter part where it necks down. I bought some 1/2" thick Silicone Rubber sheet and cut a strip to put under the rear clamping surface and wrap all the way around the 3' diameter. I used some 3M 99 spray adhesive to glue it to clamping surface to stop it from sliding out. No burns now that the shields go all the way back to the opening. I looked for a high temperature plastic like Vespel or Torlon or Ryton or G10 fiberglass to machine a ring to fill the space, but the price of all these plastics is way too high, if anyone knows of a lower cost material I would be interested in trying it.

Mine had some pretty big dimples in the outside surface where the clamping flange got welded on, came that way, not after use.

I think they should be longer to cover the 3" section. Mine have dimples at the weld points, no big deal. I told my wife to be very careful and do not touch the side pipe with her leg and the first time she gets out of the car I was helping her and I look down and the back of her leg is laying on the shielded part of the side pipe. I freaked out, thankfully she did not get burned at all, thanks to Mike's shields.
FYI - After that I drove the car and when I parked it I tested the side pipe with my heat gun and the 3" section was about 110 degrees, the shield was 90 and the collector before the shield was 190.

Polished stainless will give low readings when measuring with a temperature gun. I measured mine at 200 degrees F at the midpoint and I’m betting even the 3” tail section is higher than 110, judging by the severe burn I gave myself about a month ago.

I mounted mine as far aft as I could with the front mount in front of the side pipe mount. I’m going to move it behind the side pipe bracket and see how much that covers the 3” section.

That’s where I had mine and if you’re careful you’ll be fine, but if for some reason you need to step further back you could still get a bite.

Before installing the shields I lined the backside of the shields with some adhesive backed heat barrier.

Very true and a good point when using an infrared thermometer/gun. Typically they are programed/calibrated for black or higher emissivity surfaces between 0.85 and 1.00. Polished chromium has an emissivity down around 0.10. Some guns are adjustable allowing the user to set an emissivity value specific to the surface being measured.

I wish I had thought of this. It would be difficult for me since my shields have so many holes.

Hey guys - Having some trouble finding any information on Drummer Mike's Heat Shields. Is there any link?

Didn't see any response to this question. I have Drummer Mike's email. Just PM me.

I have his heat shields and I love them. Some small dimples as mentioned before but no big deal. I did line one of them with heat insulation but didn't notice any significant temperature reduction. I will do the other one this winter if I think of it!

I did lose a clamp recently - should have checked the tightness after 3 years! I got a replacement clamp from Drummer Mike - save me a trip to the hardware store.

I have been through many of the original clamps with my shields. They worked fine riding around town. But at the track they would brake or loosen up. I also tried many t-bolt clamp combinations until I finally gave up and welded threaded rod connectors to the pipe and had the whole set recoated. Now I simply bolt the shields to the pipes.

I might consider using a jam nut, or a steel lock nut, if it becomes an issue.

I mounted mine a bit further back for more protection. When I step out, my leg hits the ground toward the rear of the shield, so further forward wouldn't offer me much protection.
