Purchased in 2014 the complete kit arrived in October of that year having traveled by sea down the US East Coast, through the Caribbean, Panama Canal, and across the Pacific to New Zealand. A promise to finish the house before starting the kit saw a 12 month delay in starting the project apart from the initial check through all the boxes. The chassis was built up as a left-hand drive car and then converted to right-hand drive and a number of chassis/frame changes to make it NZ legal....drive shaft loop, zero bump steer tolerance here, replace the seatbelt bar behind the cockpit amongst others. Then building new cockpit/footbox aluminium (it isn't simply a case of mirroring things).

A couple of surgeries slowed things down, as well as the usual family things with growing children.......

Body work! there were times I wondered if it would end......sanding, sanding, and more sanding.......followed by sanding...... That paint is straight off the gun, not even wiped clean or polished, painted by a boat painter as a favour, not bad for a freebee!

As the end gets close......the job list just gets longer, and longer, and longer.....wtf??? And then suddenly its all done.

I have to say that embarking on this project from the other side of the world was quite scary......sending a lot of money offshore was a bit nerve wracking, but it has been a great experience. Factory Five and every vendor I have purchased from have been outstanding in their service and so helpful with knowledge and time, and the real thing that made my car turn out better than I hoped was all of you guys on the Forum - I cannot thank you enough for your collective knowledge and encouragement. Thank you guys, all of you.

For my first car build I am pretty pleased with the outcome. I have had it valued at considerably more than I have spent, which was a pleasant surprise, and 2 days after becoming road legal I took the car to its first Caffeine and Classics show where it drew much attention and I had 4 guys offer to buy the car.........my head too large to get through the door for a while! I suspect this car will remain part of the family. 1500 cars on display - held last Sunday of each month.

132998 132999 133000

It now has 200 miles on the clock.....still running it in and taking it very easy.......I could easily end up with a LOT of speeding fines if i'm not careful........holy hell it uses some gas! But boy does it make everybody smile!

Now what do I build next?? A GT40? A Stratos?

Sweet! Very nicely done. :) I wouldn't start planning your next build just yet. These cars are never really "done". ;)

Beautiful! Love the colour combo, what blue did you go with? Doesn’t look exactly like Guardsman but that could be the light in the pics. Regardless, nice shade of blue and the engine bay is tops.

I'd be in the garage with the hood open mezmorized by the Inglese 8-Stack injection system.
Heck, I don't know if I'd ever leave the drivewway if I had your setup under the hood.
7.0 liters + 8-Stack + Right Hand Drive = One Amazing Build
Congratulations & I Love The Painted Louvers!

Beautiful car, congratulations! I love all of the choices you made. You have some good company with the other roadsters at your C&C, but yours is a show stopper. Tell us about the badge on the side. Is that a car club or race team decal? Looks sharp.

Congratulations, she is a real beauty!

I really like the details and the color. I also admire building this on the other side of the world; it must have been even more nerve-racking than you said!

My vote if for you to build a GT40 next. This way I can live vicariously through you...

Great car!

Regards,

Steve

Hi Kyle, thanks for the compliment. Colour choice was the hardest decision of the whole process! Right through the build it was going to be Black! Then the wife said No!!! you cant have anything other than Guardsman Blue and Wimbledon White stripes! So that what it is - I had the colour mixed using the recipe for AC Cars 1965 Guardsman Blue (this is slightly different from the Ford colour of the same name - largely due to different size metallic fleck) and the stripes are Ford 1965 Wimbledon White

Yes we have a very active club and there are some nice cars that receive a lot of love and attention - in the photos I posted are an FFR Mk3 (silver and white) a New Zealand kit by Kiwi Race Cars (metallic Moss and wire wheels - this car has a 302 and it is seriously LOUD!!!) and the dark blue car is a Superformance.

The badge on the side is the Terlingua Racing Team logo as used by the Shelby team on their Mustangs - there is a great story behind the logo and how it came about - https://terlinguaracingteam.com/terlingua-racing-team-history/

Thanks for the compliment on the car.

I am afraid that we haven't beaten Covid, we have simply delayed the inevitable - at the moment we are the kid hiding in our bedroom but at some stage we will have to open the door again..........but yes, in the meantime life is relatively normal here, simply because we have the advantage of living on a group of islands so isolation is pretty straight forward, so long as you don't want to go anywhere else.

Your car looks fantastic Brett! I too love the color and that it looks so smooth without sanding and polishing. Is it marine finish or automotive finish? Clear coat or single stage?

Congratulations! I can relate to the elapsed time and some of your obstacles. But, it feels great, doesn't it! I wish you the best of luck with your new creation and hope you enjoy every minute of it.

Thanks Mark. The paint system is automotive and the process pretty much the same as everyone else uses - body on panel fit and basic body prep by me to primer level, body off and painter took over and gave it 2 coats of high build undercoat with sanding between, then painted the whole car Wimbledon White base coat - 3 coats, I laid out the stripes and roundels, 3 coats of Guardsman Blue base coat, wet sand, 6 coats of clear, wet sand, then one final clear to flow on the final gloss.

Thank you. I have 500miles on it now and it is becoming more driveable and fun with every outing. The wife is more keen than me! The 427 is pretty thirsty! have been averaging about 13mpg during the run-in period, but the last tank disappeared at 10mpg and this will only get worse as I introduce more right foot. I don't think I have even got near qtr throttle at any point yet. I have stopped listening for noises and relaxing a bit now. I am not sure if the waves, cheers, and thumbs up are for the car, or the wife? I know they ain't for me.
