Some build history from Jan 09
I think technically we can say I'm in transition from Prep mode to build mode!!!
We had a few things come together this morning that make it a red letter day. I had most of the major assemblies for the car for awhile but decided the built 8.8 (spare for my Mach1) rear was overkill. So I sold it a few weeks ago to a friend and used the money for a few other items and a complete with brakes stock Mach1 take out rear. The rear will be here next week via freight and that was the last big part I needed.
So where is my FFR 33 Hot Rod today???????????????
It's in one of the things below ------------ as of this morning 1/10/09!!!

The engine came from a 2003 Mach1 that was totalled with 2900 miles. It has been sitting for years awaiting install in a 66 Mustang vert belonging to a friend. He got stalled building a 66 2+2 with a Ford V10!!!! I'll get pics later when he let's me.
It will have bolt-ons only. All the internals should be fine for the 33. It will have AC to drive and a vacuum evac pump in place of the PS. The evenflo cooling mod will be installed along with an EMP water pump. The oil filter housing will be replaced with a FRPP unit using a remote filter. I have a canton 7qt pan and some additional engine dress up parts.
Induction will be a KarKraft adaptor to a 289 intake with a Holley 2barrel ???
OR
VCP's Stack intake with the tall stacks, WHICHEVER looks better :lol::lol:

The transmission is also a Mach1 take out from an 04. Standard TR-3650 but because it came from the Mach1 it will have a .62 overdrive, not the standard GT .68 OD.
I'll use my normal mix of Mercon V ATF (fixed - changed from Mobil 1) and Lucas Tranny Fix to keep it lubricated and quiet. The shifter is stock but I have a few short throw assemblies available. My first choice would be the MGW but it won't bolt up to the handle I want to use.
I have an old Hurst Ram-rod (vertical gate) shifter handle that seems to bolt on. It would still work normal but look wild. The other option is some old NASCAR handles and knobs. The UPR handle on it now would look OK too with the right knob and a boot that just covers the hardware.

I'm still working on colors using a model. The wheels are pretty close to right, I need to make the centers natural or anthracite to match the real car. Obviously the engine is wrong.

Just picked up some shorty headers for the car. I used these on my previous Mach1 and they were awesome. JBA Titanium coated and in great shape. I'm still not convinced these will be used but even if I go a different way they fit my 03 Mach1. I paid less than half the street price new, these sell for $680 to 800.

We got to the shop at 7:59 ish and yes there was a surprise!!!
The truck got there at 7:38 and Wayne already had the car and boxes loaded in his 16 foot trailer. We still got pics of FFRHR#37 and some of the shop, it was VERY cold for AL so we didn't hang out too long.
Here's a few pics, I have more coming later. The whole operation was complete BEFORE 9:30am. :worship:
I have some great friends to thank:
Wayne - owner of VCP and my FFR mentor
Don Doherty - M1R member and my hot rod mentor
Barrie - WCC club member
Frank - WCC Pres
and as always the family

I'm having a blast!!! I have the inventory complete and everything was exactly as indicated on the sheets............... except:
Doors were not on the BO list and not on the car??
I had a visit from Wayne and Erik Treves yesterday evening to see how I was doing. It's great to have so many experienced hands standing by when I need help. Marking panels and a few other things today and the body comes off.

More progress with getting things stored out of the way and getting some panels marked. I thought my ebay/for sale box would be full but there will only be a few items that get upgraded. So far it's just the overflow tank, all of the gauges, and the front rotors/pads.

Didn't have anything planned for the car today but still managed to unpack and store some backorders that came in ..................... and stole a few minutes to build the shocks.
I have a mock up AC/heat/defog unit coming soon. I sent a sketch to a friend that does CNC work for a glove box, center gauge bezel, driver gauge bezel, and bezel for the retractable license plate mount.
The plan now is:
tach on the column
driver bezel will have speedO, fuel gauge, and all switches
Center bezel will have water temp, oil pressure, volts, and A/F (WB)
The glove box is 1.25 inch deep with AC controls, wireless audio controls, and the navigation system inside, no room for gloves. The radio antenna was planned for the underbody forward of trunk but will not be used now. The GPS/Sat radio antenna will be installed in the inspection panel opposite the brake reservoir panel.

I had some medical stuff to do today but made time to go pickup my battery. The guy I bought it from is someone I trust so I had already given him the money. As it turned out the battery was older than he remembered but it had never been installed. I used it to start my Mustang today so it seems fine. He felt bad about it being older and insisted I take $20 back.
I have a perfectly good Optima Blue Top for $40, not bad.

I worked on the firewall today and had to trim the passenger top a fair amount. Seems like everyone should just plan on doing the same. I played with some things but it just had to be done, I didn't measure how much I filed off but it was more than I expected. At least 1/8.

I'm getting close to being on the wheels up front. The rear is progressing too.
I was not happy with the upper ball joint seals and I still need to tighten some things. I didn't notice my socket for the hub nut was 3/4 drive so it will be tomorrow before that job is done. I worked out the welds and it looks like the alignment won't be too pretty until I make some more progress.
I also had to grind 3 flats off the big lock nut on the rack, lucky me.

It took about 3 hours to final drill and tap all the firewall and footbox screws (nearly 100). I originally planned to use rivets so the holes were spaced closer than what is needed for 1/4 20 screws. At least I'm done. Some where a real PITA to get in straight but it just takes time and the right tools.
Because I'm changing engines after about a year (maybe) I thought it would really help to be able to easily remove and rework the firewall.

Not much new but I did test fit some stuff to the firewall and have to wait on the right adapter for my shift knob. The packing list reads M12x1.75 but the enclosed M12 is clearly a finer thread. They will send out the right one tomorrow.

The water and oil filter adapter is a Ford part but not the Explorer adapter which allows the filter to spin on. I will use a remote Moon filter. :001_cool:

The engine paint is finished except the oil pan and intake install. The alternator and compressor are all cleaned up but have to wait until after the engine is installed. I have to strip the paint above the headers if I decide to then bolt up the clutch and tranny.
The intake will attract most of the attention anyway. :worship: The pan is just as pretty as the intake but will be hard to see. It's still getting polished and zooped.

The last few days have been a waste for working on the hot rod. Tonight I did get some stuff set up for tomorrow and the weekend. I have about 3 hours of finishing up old items that needed parts or rework then I can make some progress. I am running a Mustang Cruise In on Saturday so I will have to detail the Mach1 and pack up the club equipment. After that I will have off until mid day Tuesday.
I might have the engine with intake installed before the end of May. I did get the cooling system parts in and will install the gauge sending unit fitting in the PS freeze plug tomorrow. I have plenty of options for the APS mod after I see what looks good.

I wish there was more progress to report but everything I've done recently seems like I'm standing still. I have painted parts, touched up previous work, and added some shine to a few things. The electrical items I plan to add have arrived and now the AC seems like something I might be able to do without according to the wife. After riding around in a roadster today between showers, I might be the one insisting on AC now. :D
The intake will get some polish in the next few weeks. I have some items that need to be Zoop sealed now.

It may seem like a small thing but I got the car nosed into the garage. With it not running and the brakes still not finished it was a task to keep it on my steep driveway.
Today was the first time #37 was out of the garage on wheels. I got a few other things done and the weather is getting almost cool enough to work again. I'm TDY next week so progress will be delayed.

I just checked my bumpsteer kit and they should only need a 3/8" cut to work perfectly. Here are some pics of my rough cut outer tie rods that should have been cut 1/2". Even at 3/4" they could still work but won't look as good as the aluminum parts. I'm gonna cut them on a lathe Monday.

I built another Stimulator this evening. The last one went to another MegaSquirt rookie that lives nearby. He decided to have DIY build his MS2 and instead of him returning his Stim and relay board I traded him the units I previously built. This should be a great warm up for assembling my MS2/3. I'll do the Relay Board later tonight or tomorrow.
What you want at the end is a bunch of empty bags.

The harness I bought ready made from DIY. It connects the relay board to the ECU and should make the external wiring a snap. This component was very easy to build.

There is only about 3 minutes on the buffer for each stack and maybe 8 minutes per rail. They look plenty good in person but will take some effort to "keep" them shiny on the car.

I have the intake together and have fabricated the throttle cable bracket. There are a few minor challenges with the intake install but I think it's safe from powdercoating at this point. I'm surprised how long it takes to salvage connectors and layout a custom harness. None of it's hard but it is time consuming.

I worked at the church much of the day but I did get a few things done. I have a belt on the engine now and can confirm the belt size needed.
Using the Mach1/Cobra DOHC engine without AC, PBs, or PS the layout below works. The stock tensioner is retained and the belt I found that worked best is listed below:
Tensioner (if a new one is needed) = 38189 (about $25-35)
Belt = Gates Micro-V K060588 (about $28-35)
The K060585 is the smallest that will work and the K060590 will work but is at the end of the tensioner range. I have the Mach1 alternator pulley which is slightly larger than the standard DOHC pulley. My backup alternator will have the cobraR pulley and it is much larger. This is a starting point because there are different crank and idler pulley sizes you can use.
To install the belt with this layout you have to loosen or remove the tensioner to pass the belt behind it. Pics below:

My son is putting a hydraulic clutch on his 03 Cobra and after looking at that kit it would be a neat looking way to stop the firewall flex.
Tuesday night I should be putting the front end back together if Fastenal has the right hardware for my steering arms.

cool build thread. What's the status? Love all the pictures. I dig the mooneyes shiftknob and stickers.
Thanks, the status is I'm short-handed at work and can't seem to get the time to work on the car. I thought the situation was going to get much better because we hired 3 new guys for this new contract. My schedule got much better until this week when I lost one highly experienced pilot to a medical retirement and two others quit to work on overseas contracts. It's been a strange time because these are Govt jobs and we can't keep staffing levels at minimum. These guys must not be watching the news. They seem to be going for the few private sector jobs available.
I've got a game plan and we keep buying parts so progress is happening. My wife was shocked last week when she came home and noticed the grille was off and the whole front suspension was on the floor. She thought I decided to put it back in the boxes, haha. I'm going back to apply the recall hardware change and upgrade some seals. The good news is I have a paint and body fund that's fat (I hope fat enough) and every single part of the car is paid for.

Also, I was called by a friend who works at a local shop which builds hot rods, does restorations, and builds old vettes on new vette running gear. They need work and offered to do some finish work on the car. It's tempting but I want to do the mechanicals myself and perhaps send it to VCP for tune. They might get the job for the body work.

I'm strangely motivated by having the body on for a few days. It was time to drill some holes and plan the final gauge locations. I also have some ideas for a ventilation system that can't be validated with the body on the floor.
After sitting in there with the top on for an hour or so I think the only gauge layout I like is centering the SpeedO and putting two gauges on each side. The tach might fit well behind the wheel on the column. I have the lights and two other switches going in the dash. The ignition key will go in pointing down under the dash. I have a pair of modern devices WB and an ECU driven display that will be hinged to hide away below the SpeedO.
I really need some tires for my wheels too. The Mach1 17x8s are way too small.

Thanks, it's not finished yet and I'm making a few changes soon. I need to get some XtraTall stacks from Wayne at VCP. I'm thinking 4 to mix in with the tall ones I already have. The other problem is the paint on the cam covers, it does well against the heat but is too easy to scratch through. We have some ceramic paint we use at work that is heat friendly and wears like iron. It's the same exact color as my brake calipers. I have some other items going over to my friend Don's oven after getting some powder. I hope my coil covers look good against the bright red cam covers. They're very nicely powder coated and it would be a shame to mess with them.

I've been measuring some stuff with the body on just to see what needs to go where under the dash and decided to put the car on all 4 again. I'm pretty sure about my tire and wheel choices now and I won't be using such an extreme tire height stagger. Even with the body unsupported in the back and 4 equal size tires it has a decent rake angle.

It's nice to get back in the shop after a week on the road. My next trip is right around the corner and I might just spend time organizing parts and stuff. It looks like I might be moving way up North and taking a new job when the house sells. I'll probably make some extra trips up to Huntsville, AL with the family to make sure we all can make the move work. I think my current job has run it's course, the people I work for are doing things I just can't support. I hope we can get the body parts to the point that the painter can do his thing.

I spent the weekend sorting things out so it would be easy to start some projects on the HR. That lead me to order a few parts and do some planning. I fixed some nagging problems on the rearend tonight and then started building my ECU.
How can you tell a rookie like me has started on a MegaSquirt build??? Look at the index finger on his left hand. I seem to burn it once early in the game and then I'm ok. I don't normally handle a soldering iron so for some reason I insist on putting a shiny blister on my finger almost right away.
This will be the third MS box I've built but for some reason I just don't have much confidence with the process. This one is going to be a full MS3X ECU and shouldn't be any bigger challenge to build. The MS3 boards come ready to plug in so that shouldn't be an issue. All I got done tonight was parts sorting and soldering on the connectors for the main board. I'm going to need a better/bigger bench light and have to remember to wear my new glasses. Man this stuff is small.

First thing to happen this evening was my shop light fell apart.
Well that gave me an excuse to purchase a new lighted magnaviewer. This thing kicks butt. I went back and fixed the few crappy connections from last night and then only made it through one bag of resistors. It was a mistake not building this box as soon as it arrived. I had built 2 MS2 back then for others and it would have been so easy to stick another one together. I'm having to bone up on soldering and tonight I made a mistake that was new for me. I started on the first bag of resistors and installed R1, it went too well because I pulled out the next same value resistor and stuck it in R2. Oooops, it should have gone in the R6 position. Then I got to bone up on my desoldering technique.
I think after a sloppy start it should go better in the days ahead. I'll post some pics as the board grows but this is not really that hard. I just hope the dang thing works when I'm done.
This is how the night ended

It's hard to believe that the plastic container has everything you need to build an ECU. You can see some of the other items in the service kart. There's a stimulator, relay box, wiring harnesses, sensors, EDIS8, and the MS3 and 3X expansion boards. This should come together in the next week or so.

Hi Guys. I just changed job duties and I'm closing out my BSA work. As a result, I spent a few hours digging out the hot rod over the last few days and should be able to continue my project. Time will tell. Updates to follow.

Radiator hose parts arrived this morning. Packaged well and looking good. I had to do some minor deburring on the inside of the thermostat housing. Pics below:

You will need hose, hose ends, and fittings to make this work. Also a SBC thermostat and o-ring. I don't have the thermostat and o-ring yet. There are many options for hose, I'm using the push-loc style with Jegs PL hose. The oem temp sensor will screw right into the taller block outlet, it will work on either side. A 3/8npt tap is available for cooling mod return or second temp sensor, mine will be plugged. At present I plan to run my cooling mod hose down to the bottom radiator hose/pipe. If it looks ugly or I run out of room I have the tap on the thermostat to use.

Thx, I'm getting in a few minutes a day and sometimes a couple of hours. I had a problem today putting the body on to do some fitting. I never did get it to fit right on the passenger side near the firewall. We ran out of time and I took it off to try another day. Obviously I need to look at the stuff done since it was last on. It's been fun seeing some progress.
