View Full Version : How much room under the dash?

I'm mocking things up to see how an A/C evaporator unit fits under the dash and thinking about modifying things to raise it up a little. It looks like there is at least 3 1/2" from the frame pieces to the dash to run the vent lines, but I'm just trying to hold things in place to measure it. Can someone that is further along than me measure that area?

thanks,

Rick

It's difficult to measure with the dash on but I approximated about 4 in from the under-dash frame to the front lip the with dash on. It's been a while since I measured it so I don't remember the precise measurement I had. But if you have your windshield on you should be able to take the same measurement.

I don’t have the windshield on. Being a C the roof is not on. I assume the dash goes on basically level at the top, or does it vary depending on the stack-up of the various parts?

I’ve got some pictures saved of a modified dash with raised AC. I’ll find them tonight for you.

I decided to clean up and come inside while the fiberglass cures:

At least 4.5 inches. My 818C is with a new owner in Florida now, but my post about the glove box shows that I had 4.5 inches between the frame and dash. It might be a little more in some places since I made the top of the glove box level.

Perfect, thanks guys! The picture shows more or less what I had in mind to alter the framework. I didn't really have something that fancy in mind, but hadn't thought it all through yet. So I can raise the frame and evaporator up a couple inches and still have room for the ducting. There doesn't seem to be an issue with the passenger foot space, but why not have more room there than wasted under the dash.
