As part of setting the ride height I have unloaded the suspension multiple times being on and of the jack, and realized that when the rear in particular is hanging in the air, the bottom end of the spring is not on the seat. Is this normal?
The rear shocks are mounted body down and the spring is zip tied to the top hat. When the car is sitting on the ground the spring makes contact at top and bottom collars. What happens when the car is on the road and the suspension is working up and down? I wouldn't think that the spring should lose contact when the suspension is working and would make some noise when compressed Is this OK?, -or is there a remedy ?

This is perfectly normal, and isn't a problem. The springs are only off the seat when the car is jacked up and the suspension is completely unloaded.

If you want to resolve any clanking of the spring should it come off the collar, then you can remedy it with Eibach Helper Springs & Couplers.
They are designed to be completely compressed when under a load and are designed to take up the slack only when needed.
I've got them on my MK-4 which has the 3-Link solid axle rear set up.

It is an effective solution that I am happy with, but like everything else I do, I'm likely the only guy running them.

This is a great idea! Thanks. It just bothers me to see the coils hanging out in the air when the suspension is unloaded. - Another item for the "To Do" list ...
