I plan on ordering the 33 Hot Rod kit in the coming months. I live in Massachusetts and questioned if it was even possible to get a VIN, title and register a kit car here without going through the crush car scenario. Until last week, after pouring through the laws of of the commonwealth's website and finding out about the crush car method and crate motors had to pass emissions for the year you finished your build or for the year prior. I ran across a change that was made. Any emissions legal donor car drivetrain can be used as long as you retain the emissions equipment of the donor vehicle. Before the change you had to buy NEW Cats, cannister and O2 sensors and it will pass state emission inspection. You must not exceed the donors car GVW by more than 500 lbs. and keep the same approximate gear ratio and trans configuration. A Crate engine is allowed as long as it is CARB compliant. (California Air Resources Board). The GM E-Rod engines fit the bill. I haven't seen any engines by other manufacturers that give you this option or mention if there modern engines have a CARB certification. I know its an expensive option but some times if you want to play you gotta pay.
I also have a question for those in MA that have registered a FFR vehicle here. What do you do about wipers if that's not in a kit option. I've noticed on some cars in FFR videos that there are cars with MA plates and no wipers. IE: 33 Hot Rods and the Trucks. From what know, wipers are a definite requirement here for an inspection sticker. Any insight would of great help.

Welcome!! A lot of helpful people here with hotrods. There's a map you can find local people..

I can't speak about Mass, but I know a lot of people use roadster windshields and temporary clip on wipers for registration, then remove them.

MA very strict. There are cameras in the inspection bays to make sure the inspectors do it right. Not watched constantly but all recorded. I didn't want to by a kit for all that $$ and not be able to register it.

Sounds like you have a real challenge working with those strict regs in your state. Do as much research as you can on the subject before pulling the trigger. Study the 33HR map for folks in your area and make contact with them for helpful advice.

Have fun with your project.

I've been researching for a couple months and the wipr thing is my last thing that I know of. I was getting the hard top and the angle to the cowel is too steep , so that leaves putting them at the top of the windshield. The version 1 used the same windshield for both and it slanted back enough to mount them under the dash with the shaft sticking out of the cowel.

I think you may have a difficult time trying to add cowl mounted wipers that will work for both the removable hardtop and the roadster windshield. I added one wiper to my car to pass the AZ inspection -- turns out the inspector wasn't even interested. Since I attached my hardtop permanently I only had to deal with one windshield. I also wanted to remove the wiper after the initial inspection so I mounted the single wiper through the windshield and the mounting flange as that would be less noticeable when I went to remove it. If you have trouble using cowl mounted wipers (or wiper if only one is required) AND want to run two windshields, you could consider mounting wipers on each windshield that move with the windshield (or top). You can try drilling the windshield yourself (there's probably YouTube videos on this) or perhaps a glass company in your area can do it. A good source of less expensive wipers is Speedway.

Thanks. this is an introduction thread so I think I will move any future discussion to the 33 Hot Rod thread. I was going hard top only.
