Ferrari just lost the trademark for it. Wonder if we’ll see any kits any time soon?

A Re-Skinned Daytona Would Be Sweet!

Let's Hope It Happens!

Wouldn't take much to mold a new body.

Contemporary had a mold and FFR acquired those years ago

maybe it could be built on a Fiero chassis like the GT40 in the RCN contest...

Last year an Italian court ruled the Ferrari 250 GTO is a piece of art and can not be replicated or reproduced. The landmark decision declared no company can reproduce the 250 GTO. The ruling added the classic car is entirely original and must not be imitated; "production, commercialization, and promotion" of the 250 GTO belongs exclusively to Ferrari. It will be interesting to see if the court decision leads to similar arguments from automakers, especially low-volume sports car makers. In the U.S., the 2015 Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act makes it legal for low-volume manufacturers to produce turnkey replicas. Companies can build up to 325 replica cars that are at least 25 years old.

This news was from yesterday.

“ Per a report by This is Money, Ferrari recently lost its exclusive rights to the design following a legal showdown with Modena-based Ares Design; a coachbuilder known primarily for its DeTomaso Pantera-inspired, Lamborghini Huracan-based Panther Progettouno. This kerfuffle, which resulted in the 250 GTO being legally classified as a work of art early last year, was over Ferrari's 2008 filing with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), which Ares' lawyers contested was "filed in bad faith, namely, as a defensive mark in order to block third parties to produce and sell similarly built sports cars."

For companies to retain their rights to trademarks with the EUIPO, they must actively put them to use, and as Ares' lawyers pointed out, Ferrari hasn't exactly been going wild with 250 GTO tribute cars. Siding with the plaintiff, the judge reportedly ruled that Ferrari no longer has exclusive rights to the 250 GTO's body shape, opening the door for legal third-party replicas. Ferrari will reportedly retain the privilege of being the only company allowed to make 250 GTO toy cars, small peanuts though they may be in comparison to the real deal.”

Ferrari has lost trade dress rights to the immortal 250 GTO, clearing the way for clones and replicas...

A new body that fits over the coupe chassis would be slick!

Sorry Kyle, I didn't see your thread before starting mine. I've merged them to avoid the dreaded "One subject, multiple threads" syndrome.

I don't think you'll be seeing one of these come out of Wareham. It would cannibalize sales from either the roadster, Coupe or F9. Sure, there would potentially be a small number of new customers who would not build one of those three but not enough to justify or amortize the development cost. But what do I know...

blasphemy

...as was the GT40. So, supposing you could put a 250 GTO body over a coupe chassis, what would the appropriate powerplant be? I'm thinking it has to be something that gets pretty high up in the RPM spectrum.

Jeff. For once I am going to disagree with you. I bet they would sell a ton of GTOs based on the coupe chassis. I know I would buy one. The only non FFR thing I would like to see them do is use a production door with working windows.

No worries David! Just love the GTO, if only I could have one.

Ditto-

I would not make a wager on this happening.

FWIW - I think that a 250 GTO replica would be SWEET! However, the powerplant is where my brain would get hung up. I guess I'm a little bit of a purist in the sense that I'm not a fan of cross-brand power plants (sorry Go Dad ;)) My dad used to have a '76 Jaguar that he sold to a friend who proceeded to put a small-block Chevy in it. That just seemed sooooo wrong to me. At a minimum, I'd need to be able to put a v12 in a 250 GTO, and I'm not aware of any commercially available v12 crate engines that aren't made out of pure unobtainium. I could totally see a 250 GTO with an Aluminator being ridiculous fun- just not sure I could bring myself to build it.

Edited to add: Yes, I am aware of the irony in everything I just said. given that the Cobra would never exist if a special someone hadn't hatched a crazy idea to stuff some other company's engine in a nice little British roadster. ;)

Create The New Body Using Stock Production Mazda MX-5 (Miata) Doors!
....The extra cost would be well worth it just to have Real Windows & Rock Solid Doors!

Maybe a very creative fiberglass guy can make a body to fit the Coupe frame. Imagine buying a finished Daytona to use as a donor?

Heyoka, The Redbone Roadster
Wheelbase:.. 89.25"; only .75" Difference
A half an inch is no issue at all to pull off with the 3-Link rear.
Design it around the Miata MX-5 Doors and sourcing real doors with real windows won't be an issue either.

Get rid of the GTM and go this route. Amazing car, but the most expensive and difficult to build. i would seriously consider a 250 kit.

Hey Dave,

Your minions are counting on you to deliver.
Just remember who came up with the Miata MX5 door option.
Real doors with real windows with your take on the GTO Ferrari would be sweet.

Steve

PS: Some of us would love to see the Daytona Spyder to finally make a comeback.
