View Full Version : Is there a place to find builds that people gave up on?

We are about finished on completely rebuilding my Mk3. The parts taken out, although subpar (which was the reason for the rebuild) are in good working condition and would still make a fun little car. But after the huge investment I just made I would rather find one someone gave up on and maybe save some $$$$.

Is this a taboo question or something?

Not at all.

Here is a pretty good place of course, you can post a WTB post in the classified section (https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/forumdisplay.php?31-Want-To-Buy-Factory-Five-Cars).

Probably your best bet is on Bring A Trailer. They show up here occasionally (I finished one of the rare ones a few years ago) but not often. Around here if someone talks about giving up on a build and selling the crowd usually jumps on and either talks them out of it or makes them afraid to bring the subject up again!

There are kind of three categories I think you will find here. Well a fourth if you consider Steve and his Chevy powered roadster ;).

1) Those that like to build, sell, build again, sell build again and so on.
2) Those who build their dream car and you will not pry it from their cold dead hands.
3) Those that give up on their build due to lack of time, money or enthusiasm.

I kind of fall into #1 as I have a plan to build again but we are looking to make our final move before retirement and we cannot make up our mind where we are going plus COVID does not help. I truly regret selling my roadster as a I loved driving it but I want to be living somewhere where I can drive it 8-10mths of the year ideally.

As for #3, I know a guy in VA that bought a MKIV kit around 2010 and I beleive he still has not started on it. I could be wrong as I have not seen him in a long time. This is the type that eventually thinks why not sell the kit as I can’t or am never going to complete it.

Thank you all for the input. I have a 15 year old that has really taken interest and I think if I can find a good deal it would be a great project for him.
